when I take the fuel cap off to put more petrol in the tank of my 1998 vitara as I unscrew the cap it sounds like I am releasing pressure in the tank is that ok or is something wrong the engine is the single point injection type not running a carb sorry if this is a stupid question but I have not come across this before my last Jeep ran mostly on lpg so I did not need to put petrol in that often.

I've got no experience with this, so I'm not saying that the guys above saying it's fine are wrong, but something does come to mind here:

It sounds to me like the return hose to the charcoal canister might be blocked, because as far as I know, that's where the pressure should get compensated.

Some people take the charcoal canister out to get more space under the bonnet - maybe you've got a hose that's been sealed off.

Smile It's a good one.. I got quite surprised first time I heard of a charcoal canister too... And I can understand why people take them out - when I've taken mine out to get to the belts it just frees up so much space.

Mine has done that from new. The sytem is sealed when the engine isn't running so you can get some pressure build up, the charcoal canister vents to the inlet manifold when the vehicle is moving.

I drive loads of different hire cars and loads of em do this. Most are relatively new and all very regularly maintained (5k km per oil change etc). Nothing to worry about.
