hi guys ive looked at 2 4x4s today and cant decide which i want,

m reg isuzu trooper 3.1d

s reg lwb vitara 2.5 v6

its gonna be my daily drive but i dont go that far and its gonna be used for green laning, so will want to mod it slightly eg. snorkel, winch, winch bumpers and mud tyres and thats it.

whats the differance in mpg, parts and mods available

Look very closely for rust on the trooper. Rear chassis and the cross member under the radiator, or what's left of it.

I've owned about 4 3.1 troopers over the years. Loved em.

Never owed a vit.

I'd buy the vit. Make of that what you will.

I'd go for the trooper. Used to have a heavily modified one as a trialler and it was awesome offroad. You stick big mud tyres on the zuk and you best take a spare front diff and shafts with you, they're made of feathers. If your not travelling far the mpg shouldn't make much difference, although I would of thought the zuk would be better. The 3.1td engines are very good, avoid the 3.0lrs. I believe it was that was round...

I'd have the Vit, and I've owned a Trooper (the 3.0 Duty).

Trooper is nice and cushy inside but so many bits went wrong on mine, Vit's are starting to get a load of nice trick bits available, trick bits for troopers are few and far between.

Don't get me wrong, I love the old 3.1 troopers.

An 'M' reg though, that's 19 years old. The troopers were never well protected against the rust, and that's a lot of british winters since it left the factory.

I thought the V6 Vitara was a 2.0 litre.
I would buy the Vitara.

EDIT: It was pre 98 V6 Vitara's that were 2.0.

Is it an automatic or manual V6?

Question
Have you got your insurance quote on the V6 & is it affordable?

I know it is older, but it was group 24 insurance and some companies still give ridiculous quotes.

Possibly OK if you are going with '4x4 Off Road/modified cover'.

It's a manual, and haven't had a quote yet, but 40 yrs old wouldn't of thought it would be a problem, but will find out

The V6 Vitara 95 to 2000 was indeed a 2.0 litre, it was the Grand Vitara that came as a 2.5 V6.
I had to change the timing chains on a 2.0 V6, absolute nightmare of a job.
Isuzu 3.1 every time for me
