I bought a model of a MAN KAT just for something to sit on my desk at the office and my mate thought I'd gone out and bought a 1:1, which prompted me into googling the price of these things.
Now where the big iron is concerned (8x8 etc) only a man with unlimited funds would bother to look at them but I saw that the 4x4 version were going for around 5.5thousand euros sold in germany which didn't seem too OTT to me:

I'd love one for some massive expedition across the sahara but I doubt I'll ever be doing that so my KAT will be 1:27th scale for some time yet
Nobody's mentioned the King of Paris Dakar! The Kamaz!

Did trans Africa (UK to Capretown) in a camper converted 101 ambi 10 years agoor so, worked a treat, was luxury travel compared with those travelling in 110s/cruisers and living out of the tailgate. With the lift up roof we had made it effectively made it a 3 room house when we parked up. was ideal for the pair of us. Must of worked cause we were still talking after living in it for a year.
Reliability wasn't a problem, we had some breakdowns but nothing that wasn't fixable at the roadside, what more could you ask from a 30yr old ex-army truck being driven across some really rubbish roads.
The biggest thing is to make sure you look after what ever vehicle you have and to get out there and explore the world.

One of the trucks I bought for the firm recently. Would make a great camper with it's insulated and double glazed rear body with a diesel powered air heater. It's on the 43118 chassis which is double skinned and slightly different spec. This one has the diesel engine pre heater in it that the Russians do so well. Sounds like a jet aircraft on takeoff but boy it heats it up. They have a locking centre diff as standard and are full time 6x6. This one has cross locks as well working on the double reduction diffs. This type of diff is what keeps the drive line angles so good on Russian trucks and gives good ground clearance. This is equipped as a mobile workshop and tows a 12 ton trailer.
