Well the time has come to start the transformation of my somewhat heap of a Cherokee, into what will hopefully be a road going mud monster! As you can see from the pictures though, this is a little while away!

She's quite ripe, generally all over!

She's got a 360ci (5.9lr) AMC V8 up front. These things are bullet proof and depending on where you look, range from 160-240hp in standard form. Its not the power thats the best bit on these though, the torque they produce is unreal from practically idle.

The gearbox is a TH400 3 speed auto. Currently there is no low box which might be an issue, but the high/low units simply bolt on the back of the transfer box if required (as far as I'm aware). This is in need of a cleandown at the moment as it's sucked some rubbish up as some idiot removed the gearbox filter. So this is pretty high up the list of things to do.

The axles are both Dana 44's which is very important. The rears are pretty much the same design as my old trooper which I never had any problems with. The front is basically a bigger, stronger version of the Dana 35 up front in most cherokees. They're happy with 35" tyres on the rocks so should cope with a bit of mud OK. There's also a host of aftermarket parts for them which are very well priced, and quite easily available.

So, the plan...

The body is knackered, theres rust everywhere, theres not even a pillar by the windscreen - it's just gone! So first thing is to disconnect everything, rip the body off and bin that.

This should give me good access to the gearbox which needs removing, stripping, cleaning. Whilst it's out I'll also fit a shift kit to improve the shifting - only £35 so its a bargain!

There is currently a 2 barrel motorcraft carb on the engine which are renowned to be pretty rubbish so this is going. I've already bought a Truck Avenger card made by Holley. This is a specialist offroad carb designed to allow angles of up to 40 degrees with no problems. This needs a different manifold to fit it, so I have an Edelbrock Performer manifold on its way from the states. This should allow her to run much better offroad and hopefully free up some ponies to.

Once it's all running and will drive, brakes is the next issue, at the moment they're all seized. I'll strip both axles, clean em up, sort the brakes and probably truss it up while I'm at it.

Steering will be staying pretty standard. The PAS is super light even with the body on so no problems there.

Once it's actually moving and working then things are a little uncertain. I have a few ideas of what I want to do. I'm hoping something like a road legal version of this:

Stick a winch on there somewhere and I'll be about there. So, not much to do then... Confused

So ugly it almost wants saving as a 4x4 rat rod Laughing

But sounds like it will be a tough tube buggy. Looking forward to more build pictures Cool
It'll be great to see a huge yank-tank trail rig in the uk.

Hopefully the bits falling off will be the only Land Rover - esk thing Laughing

And ugly? Shocked These things look wicked! Well when theres actually metal there not just rust they do... either way, thats no longer a problem...

Had a bit of a destructive day today. In the week I removed everything under the bonnet that wasn't going to be required, basically everything apart the engine. With everything disconnected it was body mounts off, gearbox disconnected and I was ready to remove the body in the sunshine today...

Now normally this is a relatively easy thing to do, hook the forks under the roof, lift, hey presto. But this thing... it was so rusty everything just fell apart. The roof came off, the windows 'fell' out, it was a nightmare! But needless to say, the JCB won in the end Smile Now the jeep really looks like its seen better days, although it is a convertible Cool

So body off, here's what I have to work with:

I rescued a few other bits and pieces which will make life easier putting it all back together.

Had a quick look around the chassis now I can see whats there and its not in bad nick. It's got a lot of surface rust but it seems solid all over. Started formulating a plan for the thing and I dont think it's going to be too bad to do Smile

First job though, get that gearbox out and find the blockage. Boring jobs before the fun ones Sad

Er, no. Never gonna happen. I've had three of these and their BIGGEST failure is that while the drivetrain and chassis is made from granite, the body is made of tissue paper.

The kind you get for caravans/chemical loo's as it dissolves completely! Shocked

I've had an A pillar literally come off in my hand, that's when you call the scrap bloke and tell him you have another one.

(and then go outside before he gets there and strip the drivetrain off!)

I'm loving the beast bulldog Cool very cool! The tailgate might be salvageable, although I doubt it? How bad is too bad? I do have both rear side windows intact though?

That about sums it up! Razz

My manifold arrived today Smile It won't be going on until I've sorted the g/box out though... unless I get bored Wink

Cheers mate

My tailgate is rotten along the bottom, and I guess Im gonna have to give up tryin to find a decent one. Thought it was worth the ask as i broke a Chief a few yrs back which looked like yours but actually by fluke had a great tailgate (yup, i stupidly sold it to a mate about 18 months ago). Any spare ya dont want I could be interested in.

Will be interested what ya think of the 670, Im probably gonna bin mine in favour of an edelbrock, nothing specific but something just dont feel right.

You re-gearin the axles? If yes there is a cunningly cheap route via your friendly JCB dood Cool

I'll check to see how bad it is. I wouldn't hold your hopes up though! I think the glass in the tailgate is in 1 piece to, if ya can get it out!

Body wise there is nearly nothing left. I'm planning on removing the leaf springs and replacing with coils, they may be available? The original motorcraft carb and manifold will be available but I doubt you want that!

Have you got a truck avenger already?

I don't yet know about gearing, that was something I was going to ask. Do you have the hi-lo selection? Currently I haven't. How do you find the gearing for both off and on road? Oh yes? Cbeap re-gearing? I'm definetly listening!

I would like the springs actually coz a few weekends ago I was at ribbesford and managed to get one of mine bent at a right angle!

Yeah I have the truck avenger, its nothin i can put my finger on but im just underwhelmed, I went the same route as you with the edelbrock manifold etc so goin from 2bbl to 4bbl but despie ending up at a pro tuner guy recommended via rodsnsods it still isnt given me what was promised.

Keep an eye out on fleabay for mini jcb axles, there has been a glut on there of new ones and the internals are dana 44, so i picked up 4.88 R&P and new bearings etc for £100 each - your D44's are 4.10 currently. I got an extra set for my J10 but Im still lookin for 2 more for another one of my trucks so will give you a heads up when I spot them on there next.

The original motorcraft will def sell on ebay, or mine have so far,

Not that you got any floor left but the hi/lo lever is in the nearside footwell on the transmission tunnel. Your transfer is q/tech.

There is also a vacuum difflock dial in the glove box. Laughing

All going well the springs should be available unless I get lazy and can't be bothered to make up link arms.

That's a bit strange. I've been reliably informed that it should be pretty lively when everythings right? You using standard headers etc? What mods have ya done?

The D44 diff's in a JCB is an interesting discovery. How on earth did you find that out? Yea if you come accross some that your not after for yourself gimme a bell, it's always a nice option to have.

Have you uprated anything else in your axles? Hardered UJ's or anything? I've got 1 knackered one and not sure if I should just find a standard one or buy a hardened one when I'm at it?

It sounds like I'm swapping my performer manifold with an AMC 'Torker' manifold to help a buddy out. He seemed to think it's a very good manifold, and it's a proper AMC one whereas my performer was supposed to be for a Chrysler...

Yea is it a Quadratech 2 or something? I read up on it a little while ago but I forgot. I found the difflock dial, it wasn't connected to anything though but I'm assuming it goes to the two little vacuum pipes that are right at the rear of transferbox?

Cheers!

dont get me wrong, its a great engine, i just was underwhelmed by the 670, i still love the truck and the engine. The Chief is as svelte as a brick but if ya sling a 360 in a lightweight truck its mental. Even in a CJ its spinning thru 3 gears.

i would like to take credit for jcb axle but im a million miles away from spotting that one Smile as someone above said have a trawl of ********.com , lots of old jeep iron owners on there so always handy spots/hints etc. Im def after another set and the seller last time said he is expectin another load comin in so will let ya kno. Axles are stock other than that. Im an off road trundler rather than anything hardcore so the stock D44s will cope with 35's no problem.

i put hedman headers on mine.

IFSJA.org is a v cool forum for parts/tech on Full Size Jeeps

Drop me your mob and when i track down some axles i will give you a shout

Cheers Ade. That would be good, I'll PM you it.

Unfortunately this build is coming to a premature end, for good reason though I feel...

I've just put a deposit on a modified Wrangler. As much I was very much looking forward to building a tube buggy-esk thing, I have ALWAYS wanted a wrangler. I think they're just uber cool. Now this in its own wouldn't of been enough to make me part with my monies, but this particular wrangler is pretty much perfect for what I wanted to achieve with the Cherokee.

Modifications already been carried out:
- 8 Point CDS cage
- 4 link Jonny jointed suspesion front and rear
- Dana 60 axles front and rear
- Racing coil suspension
- Fuel tank+pump already fitted
- Bucket seats with harnesses
- New body work

Unfortunately it does need some work doing, but this is where the parts from the Cherokee will come in.
- Needs engine+box - The 360 AMC and TH400 should pretty much drop in
- Needs brake master - I'll refurbish the Cherokee one and that should bolt in to
- Needs props - I was planning on getting a conversion U-Joint from D44 to D60 and use/modify the D44 props.
- Needs some tyres - Ill see what I can find in the 35"-37" sort of size. They should set if off nicely.

All in all - a lot less work than building from scratch!

Before I get to go pick it up though, I'm still trying to get the TH400 to work properly. I've not pretty much stripped it completely looking for a blockage, but with no luck. I've not found anything out of place, I've double checked the shift kit that I installed. The pump looks fine. The breather is clear... so I don't know? I'm going to put it all back together and drop the avenger on, then see what it does. Damn autoboxes!

Sneaky peaks:

Cheers peeps! Yea I can't wait to get it here. Just about to rebuild the TH400 and hope that it behaves itself.

I'm also in the process of trying to find a low ratio selector to bolt on the back of the borg warner transfer box. So far, no such luck. Sad

Well good news, this build is potentially back to life!

I recently came across a 1980 5.9 V8 Cherokee at a price I couldn't pass up on. It has 3 months MOT remaining and until recently has been used everyday for commuting. Its fitted with LPG and is in reasonable (for one of these) condition. There is some rust on the body but underneath its solid. The engine + gearbox works faultlessly and it even has the high/low ratio transfer box.

The wrangler will be taking priority as thats going to be a monster once completed, but should it snow, this beast will be taxed and put on the road! I'll try and get some pictures up asap.

In terms of building it into something else, I have no plans for it yet, I'll see how well the wrangler goes first. Very Happy

Well done a bit of work on this thing to make it a little more useful.

Since purchase I have:
-Fixed a relatively large water leak from one of the core plugs
-Replaced and reinstated the heater matrix as it was bypassed due to a massive hole in it
-Fitted a new starter as the last one was a little sluggish and covered in oil
-Redone the sump gasket as I'm hoping thats where the annoying oil leak was coming from
-Taxed it

As long as the oil leak is fixed then it'll now be ready to go and terrorise some locals. I've been on a few local trips with it and it's suprisingly nice to drive. Twisted Evil

i remember years ago a mechanic at a local dealers turned up on a caravan park with one of these jeeps.. it was bigger than his caravan.. think the truck was dark green but cant really remember... he was telling us about a callout he went to on a farm as the truck had broken down...

when he arrived the farmer said it was out accross the field.. when they got to it.. he had been pulling a runnaround plough with it Laughing Laughing
He had run over a furrow and as he did a flint hit the fuel line and ruptured it... he repaired the fuel line and away he went again... i do like these trucks... they have a really nice shape... you just dont see shapes like that anymore....
