The more you look the more you find Laughing

The front PTO dog clutch had some water in the oil so I drained it. Old breather was a one-way spring rubber disk breather which I knew wasn't ideal, so I found a 1/4" BSPT fitting that would take a 6mm breather hose. Hole was BSPP but thread goo should seal it Wink

Also engine oil change after a trial and two play days. That's maybe 8 hours?
I stripped the dry sump tank to check what had settled to the bottom. A magnet is stuck to the bottom and that looked free from ferous debris, but there was a thin greecy silver paste that covered the bottom. I assume ally and white metal as it beds in? Not too worried, as the sump is sucked clean and fed into the tank before re-pumping and filtering, so this sort of muck would be invisible in your oil filter on a wet sump engine.
Once again it was great to be able to prime the whole set up with a speeder brace by hand Cool

I have wondered what to do with my 'spare' hydraulic service.

And Unfortunately I found this http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/KHD-10-Hydraulic-Winc...sh=item23259c9444

I'm not good on spare dosh right now, but that kind of has to be got Cool

That is very close to not fitting Very Happy
I left enough room to put the milemarker in the mid position, but the KHD10 is bigger in its frame. It just goes in without having to file the holes longer! I also flipped the motor so the over-run valve missed the drivers seat. (It has a choice of four positions). Now it points rearward it will keep the hoses out of the cab.
Next job is see how the seats fit with the goldfish on top of that Confused
We think we will try 3/8" hose instead of the rated 1/2". Normally the rear winch does less and the smaller hose will be a lot easier to run.
I hope to have some photo's soon Very Happy

Goldfish nearly fits Sad
I could have moved Terry's seat forward, but I nicked his footwell for the dry sump, so that seemed unfair. Instead I have taken to the winch mount with the 9" and cut the top of the box section off. Then replaced it with 6mm plate cut out of a standard winch base mount. This moves the mount 45mm further back. New picture to follow hopefully. Here is the old set up from 2 year ago;

Man that was hard work. I think getting the shots onto photobucket properly will be harder than the actual build Wink

Looks like the old photobucket program is better at uploading photo's of the right size than the new Beta version?

Making Progress; I went on a short trip to Cannock to Wilbar Hydraulics for some 3/8 hose. (As usual it takes a ridiculous amount with 2 nine foot lengths). I thought 1/2", but wondered about 3/8? Terry Winchman backed 3/8 and I agreed. But they hadn't any double wrap 3/8" so I went with 1/2" in the end. Somtimes you have to go with the will of the universe Very Happy

1/2" laid okay, so no harm, no foul. But I did have a surf of the net to see what is acceptable. The only thing I found said that pressure feeds should be seven meters per second or lower, returns three and suctions one meter per second flow velocity.
It turns out that 30 litre/min on 10mm bore is about 6 m/sec so I would have been okay. Although 18 feet at highish velocity seems a waste of back pressure even with a 3/8 valve block?

Next job is fire it up and see what happens (Not nervous at all honest) and hope to get a vid when we are next out Cool

Brosely and Bridgenorth look within reach on the LRS list Very Happy
Probably some Shropshire trials from now untill then. Plus the odd Rogue Pirate play-punch-hunt.

That were a bust! Rogue Pirates event got cancelled, just as we were putting the kit on the beast and making a brew at the event Rolling Eyes

Only 10 miles up the road luckily, so we came back and cut down 10 year old trees on my mums field and used the beast to drag them off. I can report that the new hydraulic winch is fine, but that free spool is as usual, not very free Very Happy

Might have ragged around a bit as well Laughing

and is that silver thing in front an old claxon horn thingy? if so, i want.!!!

Hi there,
we have never met before but I know you are friends with David Lloyd who lives just up the road from me. I just thought I would extend the offer of a weekend's playing at coney green farm (in between bewdley and stourport) next weekend with the NNOC - it's £25 a day for none members. Would be good to meet you and your beast if you fancied it at all.
Regards,
Simon

Thanks for the offer Simon. We can't react fast though, as Terry works most Sundays, but I am wondering how we can keep the Beast occupied (other than logging & trials), so more play days is tempting. They talk of Biggin Quarry?
I even looked at Staffs & Shrop landrover club, but they havn't much, so I'm not making a bolt on rear cross member and hunting for the bumper just for 2 ALRC events Wink

Me, Rosie (wife) and Dave used to go to trials with Mid Wales offroad club. 6th picture in this thread is MORC. Dave also fixed us up with a drag link at Broseley when we bent ours. Top Bloke Very Happy

Plunga aruga horn Cool

The top-line electric is the must-have offroad accessory Wink
I don't think it will get used much. Main gain is that it works on the radio remote. It could be good on a rear crane if that need comes up? (one for jib and one for lift).
I was thinking more for a hydraulic failure than water. I don't like getting water in my boots, and anything up to that the engine is fine. Anything more than that is water in the brake diaphram, starter motor, rear rad. It starts to get expensive real quick.

I'd best think about repairs. I see the rear left hand pads are down and that is the caliper that still needs to have the Zeus stainless pistons fitted. I'll mentally prepare myself for wrecking some dust seals.........

Signs are pointing that way.
Never ever been in the AWDC, as events were always too far south. Now with 'northey events' I think I will have to join for the Mow cop challenge event.

As an interesting aside, when I was a young teen, I went to an awdc comp and saw a bloke do 11 of 13 rolls. And still enter the next lap ! He would have aced the world record if it had been official Very Happy

Yea they're a good bunch the northeys. Always put on a good trial and they run 5 gate style which personally I much prefer over 10 gate

Now this is a pickle of a fix! Northey challenge just closed due to lack of entries. There just isn't the spare cash around the UK as I see it? And It's double sad, as they must have put in some hours to organise it all to this point Sad

There is a row of events at clubman level available. With no hydro steer or portals it is relatively low damage? I mean, I'm pretty sure we finished a Broseley event? Maybe not Embarassed

Round 1, April 7th 2013, Coney green, Stourport on severn
Round 2, May 12th 2013, Geddington Deep Scar, Kettering
Round 3, June 16th 2013, Lea Bridge, Matlock
Round 4, July 21st 2013, Woodhouse Farm, Broseley
Round 5, September 8th 2013, Weekley Woods, Kettering
Round 6, October 13th 2013, Uplands Coppice, Bridgenorth

Anyhoo, with no local challenges or punches, that's it for events with strings attached Laughing

Best fix it first, as while popping zeuss SS pistons into the rear LH I looked at the LH front. And as I just wrote on LR forum;

I have a really odd wear pattern on my front LH brake pads due to the caliper breaking a top lug Sad
Good job I had a look really Smile

It's prefix A axel swivels, with B calipers. As there is only one swivel housing type in the imperial series, is there only one caliper for the 3/8unf pipe nuts?

Crads have one for £125 and paddocks about the same price, or £56 for another. I wonder if the cheaper is a single pipe?

For a start I want to buy new, pop the pistons out and put the old Zeus stainless pistons in. And I want to avoid any mistake on my part with bolt shanks that might have caused the breakage in the firt place.

So anything wierd to look out for?
(just incase you guys no owt, or Noah sends me a good one from his parts pile)

In the end I went new. Seemed less long term hassle than going second hand, which involves much fannying around with dust seals Twisted Evil

In the mean time, while I wait for my parts, here is my biggest fan Laughing

Now imagine the radiator I designed to go with it Shocked

A problem there with rust on the zeus pistons from the old caliper. The rust was bonded on so well I used Genilite (phosphoric) and a nylon pan scruber. Nice and steady saw them come back to fresh shiney stainless Smile
Then plenty of rubber greece and in with the zeus pistons. These were very tricky to fit. They had to be spot on square to go into the body of the caliper. It was as though you had to fight the main seal to align the piston. At first I thought it was a size issue!

As a matter of interest the old unit was a very good fit on the mounting bolts, which acted as a dowls. This pattern part has a modern loose fit.

So all bled up now. Just slapping some areosol paint about so they don't look nasty in 12 month.

To the front end Exclamation

namely...........the sump Confused

This has been giving trouble since is was severly abused to make it shallow for dry sump. All that welding stress pulled it about and it appears to have cut the second gasket? When the dry sump tank drains the level is above this gasket!
There is a gasket between the pto plate and the block as well, but they are realy flat faces, ideal for a gasket. So this time it just has silicon sealer on the sump to pto plate. First thing of note is that its bolts (and some studs) tighten up properly like a thin paper gasket. So the pto plate should not move about.
I just put 2 gallon of oil in the sump, which is probably well up the crank. Lets see if that seals him Very Happy

While under there I gave the diff bolts a good extra tighten as that appeared to be on the move as well.

The rear axel got some work Very Happy

Standard breather is out, combi breather/wire-duct is in. I welded a 1/2" bsp male-male into the top of the axel. The short 1/2" elbow has a 1/4" elbow welded to it for a breather connection. (can't really see it here) This is the fourth and final version over the last few days. I needed something that would look after itself in the face of timber. Hell of a task with an air drill though as the case is 5.5mm thick.

Also a new brake pipe, as it was bent at the caliper before I welded through it at the diff end! On went brake pipe covers. (long needed). These are 5mm ally, open at the bottom with bolts welded to the axel.
The QT diff gaurd needed work where the A frame ate its bracket. It might get more bracing yet?
The KAM lid got a new filler and a 3/4" level hole that acts as an inspection hole for the dog fork. The black is silicon to seal the gap from corrosion, as these fittings are machined with steps to fit into the holes in the lid. Welds are on the inside as that makes the diameter smaller, the weld shorter and hopefully less stress.

I need to finish re-assembling the engine sump which looks so far to have taken? Fingers crossed Confused

SORC Trial Report Very Happy

Sunday we were off to half-way-house for a Shrophire Offroad Club trial. With 9 sections and 16 cars we dodged all but some light rain that was meandering through. First section I dropped in the wrong difflock negating the fiddle brakes, no chance of making the turn. I stopped, shunted and carried on without incident, so that could have been a clear if I wasn't being daft Confused
2 and 3 wern't much better. They were spiral sections and that always nails me. Something about crossing my own path? But the mornings work means there is nothing to play for, its all over points wise Laughing
Trying to drive over a wrecked potato harvester canopy isn't working either and gets a 10. I needed more momentum.
Mid afternoon triggers some knowledge from the past, or my headache fuses out unhelpful thinking? The last section 9 sees us with a clear, with me and the beast as one. This is preceeded by section 8, where the harmony is even greater! Up a stream bed I need to make a turn right back into the field. Front difflock on, I hit the gas, he falls over to the left, with right hand wheels in the air Shocked Settling on a rock at an angle it shouldn't, I reach down into the truck (should be accross) and get reverse. Gas again and it's back on its wheels. The crowd goes wild Cool

I'm hoping that a photo will get sent to me to complete the imagery.
I was pleased at the lack of smoke that normally accompanies an RV8 rollover, so another point to dry-sump Smile
I think the fiddle brakes will have to go in the clutch position. Time to think how the mounts will go........

Yep, milner fiddle brakes sure are nice. I have 3/4" not 5/8" so that part explains the lack of grunt. I can't even remember there being a smaller bore option when I bought mine?
Too nice to butcher though, so time to 'store' all the lever and frame parts, find another RRC clutch pedal, mount both on the standard pivot pin and place the fiddle brake bodies where the clutch master cylinder used to be. Simples !

Four pedals might of been the easy bit?
Each RRC clutch pedal has two top hat bronze bearings. Now these two only have one. Then I cut the foot off the new one and welded it on the other side (gained an inch) Then they got hit with a big hammer.

Next stage is the rods and a fabricated CNC cylinder frame Confused
