Hi guys, I'm not a stranger to this site, although it's been a while since I last posted. However, I can seem to get logged in with my old account - BradThunder, so had to create this new one.

Anyway, I'm trying to re-fit the transfer box on my 90. Got it out ok-ish, but it's refusing to go back in now that it's repaired (hopefully).

I have it almost in position, but can't seem to get the top hole onto the captive bolt on the gearbox and no matter how much I shimmy it back an forth, I just can't seem to get them to line up. They're literally millimetres apart. I had to replace the mounting rubber and was wondering if that might be a factor, although I can't see how as it seems to be the same thickness as the old one.

Has anyone done this before and if so is there anything I should know be it glaringly obvious or a tricky little tip? I have the selector lever forward as if it was in High.

Also, I'm doing this by myself, so don't have a second pair of hands to rely on.

Thanks guys.

The old rubber might of had a little more give as it was old an the newer one a little stiffer

Don't know if this helps or not

Steve

Ok, so after an liberal application of much needed common sense - the two weeks that the transfer box was out meant that the gearbox - not having that additional support - must have settled a bit, so jacking it up, meant that the captive bolt now lines up with the hole on the transfer box.

Now, the question is, how to get the mating surfaces together? Does the T.box need to be in any particular gear... High/low/neutral and does the difflock need to be engaged or not? Will the gearbox output shaft align itself with the t'box or is there something I need to be doing in order for them to engage? I ask as I don't want to be forcing anything that I shouldn't!

Fit the box with the top gear out and fit with the box bolted down.

The box should almost fall into place if all the bolts are lined up and you don't have any linkage traped (don't ask how I know Embarassed )

It also makes life ears if the mountings are removed as you refit it. The gear box will take its weight.
