A couple of years ago I replaced my rear axle hard brake lines and now I need to do the fronts between the HCU and the flexible pipes.

Can anyone please tell me if the fittings are the same size each end, and what size they actually are? Also are the flares the same each end?

There are a lot of bends in the longer line - can I use copper?

Steve.

3/16" cupronickel pipe is the size required. Union size at wheels is 3/8" 24tpi UNF, long thread. Double flares both ends. Can't remember the sizes at ABS unit, they were different, so I re-used the old unions as they were in good condition.

Brilliant - thanks Rob.

Any problems with fluid draining out the abs unit? I was going to put a bolt in the hole if I could find the right size.

Steve.

The fluid shouldn't drain out if the ABS is disconnected first, a temporary plug is a good idea. I had a few abs warnings come up after the job was done. In theory a scan tool is required to cycle the pumps and valves, but advice on a yank forum led me to do it the redneck way - cycle the ABS on a deserted wet road a few times and copious amounts of bleeding.

In my last MOT they said that all of the brake pipes are getting rusty and should be replaced would it cost much to have them all renewed it is a 2001 XJ 4ltr I think the next MOT in in about four months time I should add my days of crawling under cars has long gone.
