Hi Guys,

Have sold the CruiseLexus and have started the Surf wagon (G wagon with truck cab'd Toyota surf body).
I've ben trawling the forums trying to find any info on the BMW 2.5/3.0 tds + manual gear box as I think this would be a good engine to swap in.
Anyone have any info on this engine with regard to electrics? or know of any one whos put one in a G? I know they put this engine in the RR P38 & SPAM's but I believe the engines were de-tuned for them. Bit of a shame to change the 3ltr 5cyl as its only done 40,000 mls Shocked so not evan run in Laughing but I would like better fuel ecconemy and the extra power is always welcome Wink

Cheers

Mark.....

personally wouldn't go for a 2.5 tds, or at least from my experience of them in my old P38, basically it was gutless! think the 330d motors are a different game though they're up 200hp direction and oodles of torque whereas the 2.5 is something like 134hp and no pull from the bottom end!

Cheers for the advise, not an awful lot of decent RWD diesel stuff about with manual gearboxes for £1200 or less. Will keep looking on the usual sites as well as copart for a cat D or C.

Thanks for the offer but if I were to go the V8 route again I'd go for another Lexus V8 as there just awesome.

Do you know what manual RWD gearbox would go on the back of the 1KZ? Don't want the transfer box as I want to run the Merc TFB.

Cheers Mark....

Well I now have my engine & gearbox Very Happy Picked up one of these

3ltr 150BHP Isuzu Grafter, only done 88k mls, best bit is the gearbox ratio's, with a mega low 1st and a 5th a wee bit higher than the G 5 speed, also has a transmission brake and a cable gear selector.

Can any one confirm weather sprinter rear discs will fit on the rear hubs of the 460G? as I want to junk the rear drum brakes.

Cheers

Mark...

seems a shame to rip the engine out of that! looks quite tidy, although saying that should make an interesting build, looking forward to it. should be nice and grunty low down. deffinately a good choice over the 2.5tds!

Good choice.i have a mate that use to run a few of them and the amount of sand etc that went in the back and it still pulled well up hill was amazing.seems to be a proper van engine not just a tuned car engine like the french stuff.

Will love to see this but will miss the nascar sound of skippy.

Scotty

I do hope so Sigh, it doesn't rev very high so I guess it gets up to speed with sheer grunt? The G wagon diffs are 20% higher ratio so should do 70mph ish @ 2000 revs?

Cheers Scotty, will have to make a recording of Skippy and play it through some big ass speakers LOL.
Went down the yard today to see what I'd bought, as I haven't seen the Grafter until today.
Engine looks clean for a 10year old work horse!!!

G wagon chassis is very solid and makes a lovely blank canvas.

Should be a interesting winter project Very Happy

Have been busy moving into a new workshop so haven't done much, as it stands...... The engine is in the chassis on its new mounts, the G'Box to T'Box propshaft is done and fitted and the Surf has been cut up ready to stitch together. Hope to get back on with it this weekend. Need a drivers door if anyone knows of a 2nd gen being broken pref in kent Wink

Got a bit more done, The back end has been done (need to get some more pic's as these are about 8 months old) Rear axle has been stripped and re-built with disk brake conversion, new bearings & bushes, also fitted a watts linkage. Propshafts converted to LR units for ease of maintenance.
All converted to LHD (including wipers). Next jub is to remove and strip/rebuild front axle with RCV H'duty CV's.

I did contemplate doing that, but the lure of the Toyota truck cab was to much to resist. Very Happy
