Hi,

I have recently aquired a sportrak after the kia sportage died, (big end failure, at 90k!)

All gears engage smoothly including reverse, however when selecting 1st gear, esspecially up hill, there is a severe juddering, you have to ease the clutch off very gently to move away. Im unsure of the millage on the car but estimate it to be around 120k (ish)

All other gears are fine and there is no judder in reverse at low speed either.
Any ideas?

Does this sound like the clutch is worn? im afraid i dont know much about manual cars, this is my first one after years of autos!

Thanks
James.

Just to add, this isnt due to driving style, it happens when my other half drives it aswell.

Any ideas, or ways to test/check the clutch?

just put an answer on the dd site, but just reading this, you said you put it in 1st going uphills, is that while moving? cos you'll have a job to select 1st on any vehicle really while moving.

Check gearbox and engine mounts. Check condition of the rear prop ujs and rear axle mounts.

If that's all ok then it could be oil on the clutch.

Possible contamination on the clutch, has it been standing a long time?....I had juddering on my van when pulling away after it had stood for 8 weeks over the winter, juddering disappeared after it was used a few times.
