Quite a capable motor off road due to the Limited slip diff on the rear, i have the 2.7 diesel and only do light green laning.
Dont put it into 4wd on tarmac or youll end up winding the transmision up.
IMHO they are a good all rounder.
I run mine standard, youll have to wait for one of the serious brigade to come along, for info on worthwhile mods

Go for a 2 inch body lift kit from xpajun, 2-3 inch suspension lift, get rid of the original plastic under body protection and change it for 2-3mm steel sheet preferably perforated. I made my snorkel but there are kits outthere. Mud tyres from tyres direct are reasonably priced. I find that with rough terrain the LWB gets caught up. So a winch helps if out on your own. I havent found anywhere that sells a front winch bumper for the Merrano (Maverick/Terrano)

See how you go with Standard wheels and M/T's before purchasing larger wheels.

as said before they are a pretty capable off roader even standard allthough mine is far from it to get you started do a 2inch susspention lift and some 31inch mud tyres and bin the anti rollbars and you will be very supprised where it will go.
also jack the rear axle up and spin the wheels to see if the lsd is working ok.

there are winch bumpers out there but there big bucks
