2001 Lada Niva

PostPosted: Sat Feb 10, 2007 2:24 am    Post subject: Air Conditioning Reply with quote

Soon it will be summer -- and with temperatures in the 40's over here, an air-conditioner for my 2001 Niva (Russian model -- 1.7 carb'd) would be a good idea.

I've read that there's an aftermarket Australian model, and according to this site there's a Japanese company that makes on for the Lada Zhiguli (which theoretically should fit in a Niva.)

I can't find information on any of these aftermarket conditioners. Has anyone installed one? From where? Any problems? How much?

I sent an email to the site admin, and this is the reply:

somebody sent it to mailing list, we don't know him,
and his email address doesn't exist Sad
sorry.

I still haven't been able to Google anything about a Japanese kit (or the Australian one, for that matter).

I found this one on an Israeli website:

http://www.alex-original.com/Categories.asp?pag...ditioning%20Units

I sent an email and I'll let you know if they get back to me.

Try the following google search for the same product from other suppliers:

Thanks.

A bit more of a search found several dealers across Russia -- I'm looking for a local dealer/installer now.

I found some pictures here of the conditioner installed in a Niva (bottom of page.)

Placing the evaporator above the standard heat exchanger is a great idea. I had visions of a kit being a box hanging from under the passenger side dash. The duct tape is a nice look of course Wink Very professional Smile
It wouldnt be too hard to collect parts from another car and copy that system shown. Just need a button inside that operates the compressor clutch solenoid and you are all go.
Its got me thinking at least.. Its bloody hot in Oz after all..

The kit for the Niva costs around 1500 Euro! Shocked

Kits for American cars (classics and hot-rods) are around US$800.

Yeah, aftermarket ACs for the Niva all seem pretty dear.

If I wanted AC I'd look at pulling a used Jap import. It'd probably be a reasonable amount of work, but I imagine you'd get the bits for next to noting.
I've torn off and tossed out several of my Hondas, and am starting to wish I'd kept them just for a wee look see what would be involved in fitting one in a Niva.

I've seen 2 AC Ladas here in Western Australia. Both were in scrap yards. Neither lasted more than 50,000km but the AC looked solid. One of them I tore apart to make myself an air compressor.

They looked pretty simple and I was almost tempted to AC my Lada but I wanted an air compressor more.

If anyone's look at 'factory' fitted Niva AC - just make sure it's NOT the same as fitted to South African Nivas. "Neither lasted more than 50,000km" suggests to me it may be the same...

According to the SA parts dealer there (Centurion) SA AC Nivas are garenteed to destroy no. 4 cylinder at low kms.

Why would the AC do that to the engine? How on earth did they rig it up?

Pass.

Have a look at the technical page at http://www.ladacenturion.sa.gs/ (down at the moment, but was there just a few days ago), and in the buyers guide he mentions it.

PS - does everyone else find South African sites only load once in a blue moon? eg the LOCSA has their saite at about five different addresses, and severel work, but only very occasionally.

Thanks. Found it on that site eventually.
He believes the AC compressor is too large for the Lada engine causing too much low RPM load, thereby lowering oil pressure. Interesting theory. Probably good advice.

As far as I know low engine RPM's at idling speed were causing a lack of proper engine lubricating, as well as overheating problems in South Africa.

Some positive comments about an original Lada Aircon in South Africa can be found here:

http://www.locsa.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=...lay&thread=73

By the way, I think the local parts dealer's (Centurion) comment should rather be seen as a warning against low engine idling speed , when any given aircon gets installed.

Anyone who has problems in finding the South African site could just try this link - it always works :
