Are the rear brakes on a GV any better than a normal vit?

Fed up with the brakes on my vit and was thinking of trying to fit GV brakes by changing back plates etc.
Would even swap complete axle by welding spring & shock mounts etc in correct place.
Don't want to fit disc brakes already tried it with rover calipers on a sammy & wasn't impressed.

Cheers Steve.

ok so lets look at the pros and cons of disk conversion done by literally thousands of Sammy, SJ and Vitara owners using rover 600 calipers and disks..

cons..
cost

pros:
no replacement pads every time you drive past a puddle
nice solid rear braking
a handbrake that works

why wouldnt you be impressed?

i would assume you would be looking at some air in the system... or something similar.

Toseland, have a read around buddy, the 'literally thousands' of users report the following problems:

Poor pad life (not a lot better than drums)
Poor handbrake
seized calipers

Have a read of this:
B4V blog LINK

That said, I have a set of 400 calipers sat in the garage waiting... Rolling Eyes

Calipers dont seem to last long before they seize up.

So far I have had 2 second hand calipers from scrapyard and 3 reconditioned calipers from motor factors, it currently has another pair of secondhand calipers on as they were cheap at the time.

I even fitted sj calipers for a while as the muddyzook brackets were drilled for either and I had transfer box hand brake anyway.

Toseland I hear what you say with your pros and cons and I agree with the principle of fitting disc brakes just saying it didn't work for me.
I am not knocking it in any way if they work for you thats good.

i was just under the impression that they worked..

Hell, rubbing a small block of wood on the tyre would be more effective than the vitara drums/handbrake.

Laughing Yeah your not wrong with that.
I thought I was doing the right thing with the sammy at the time but I don't think I will be as hasty with the vit.

i can assure you, having compared the difference between the drums, properly set up disks were so so so much better.. so i would reaffirm what i said, i think it was your disks, rather than the idea behind them..

i would really suggest you try it again, check everything.. get a gunson ez bleed too, that will h elp a lot.. with a good set of calipers you wouldnt go far wrong..

even with a bad set of calipers.. with no pads, and half a disk i would say you would have better brakes than the Vitara drums..

My rear drums, completely standard, can hold the vit on any incline that the tyres can grip.

If you're having problems with a Vit handbrake, something is wrong. They're susceptible to dirt, yes, but they can work perfectly well.

I don't have a problem bleeding the brakes or getting tas hem to hold.

First set of secondhand calipers failed at mot as they were binding which I assumed had just seized as they had been in scrapyard for a while, these have since been replaced with 3 reconditioned calipers which have also seized.

The truck now has another pair of secondhand calipers on which will be replaced with sammy calipers WHEN they seize up.

Putting Sammy calpers on the vit isn't an option without a handbrake.

Toseland it is intresting that you have not had any problems with the rover calipers as everyone else keeps saying to me ''what did you expect they were never any good when fitted to the rover''.

I'm looking at discs for the rear of my vit,as even with new shoes, adjusting and cleaning they only seem to last 2-3 months. They cheap enough but disc pads are easier to change.

Keep them clean, recon camipers on the front of mine and they get abused, but well maintained, I do think that the Lucas units I have on mind are a little more.. tolerant.
