First off, it's still dark out. So, photos will come later. However, I was driving yesterday, when I got to a bad section in the road, it's a 30cm-40cm drop off of asphalt into a hole. I was dropping into the hole slowly when, all of the sudden, I hear (with my wife), a very loud POW!!!! Like an small explosion, and something hitting the floorboard hard. When I get out of the hole, I notice that my front right, you guys driver side/my passenger sided, is sitting on my tyre. Mad

I was on my way important, and it was pooring rain and pitch black. Good thing is, I was only about 5 km from the house. So, I gentelly turned the jeep around and drove it very slowly home. I'm pretty sure that it's something to do with the torsion bar. I just don't know what yet.

From the sound, I think it may be some of the fastening bolts for the Torsion that broke. I can't image my torsion bar broke. When I have more light, I'll take photos and look under the truck. Rolling Eyes

sounds like the bolt has snaped that holds the tension on the torsion bars.

and to answer the pm a sportrak one may fit but might be a different grade so might not be as strong

you may get lucky and be able to use one from a surf/forunner,hilux pickup(mk4/5) or shogun

Thanks Nutshot! I really appreciate the offer.

Your right though, at least I wasn't going too fast, and the other thing, is that I was close to home.

As far as needing a part... I found out what I need, and I'm fixing it up now.

Parrot, you were almost right, but not quite. You got the area and that there was a brakeage, but what broke wasn't the bolt, but the tension arm itself.

Tell me about it Craige... When I do a job, I do it right. Laughing

As far as the gloves go, I'm not so sure that I'll get them dirty. I don't really like welding gloves. I usually go for mechanics gloves and just grit thru the burning flesh. Mad

Quick question for you guys though. Does anyone have a photo of the tension arm that I am repairing off the torsion bar and installed that I can see. I want to see what kind of reinforcement i can put between the 2 verticles with out interfering w/ the bolt travel arc.

Thanks!

So, I finished... uh... well almost finished the torsion bar tension arm repair. I just forgot to weld a bridge on the top to keep the walls from seperating. Other than that, I just want to paint it black and install it. Then, I'm going to take the other one off and re-inforce it.

Since we all like the photos so much, here are some of todays process.

Just so you guys know, I used a fluxcore mig welder on this. I just can't justify the cost of a real mig at the moment.Rolling Eyes Mig/gax mix is sooo much beter! Mad

I think arc is great for certain styles of welding and applications. Mig is just considerably better for finer finishing and getting into tight spots.

Today I did the same thing (gloves wise), but opposite. I'm right handed. And thanks for the complements. I haven't welded in about 8 yrs now.

So, for now, the tension arm trouble is done with. I have painted it and installed it.

Sorry. I forgot to take a pic of it painted before I installed it. Eventually, when I have the time, I will be pulling the other one off and re-inforcing it too. For now though, I driving my Trak again. Very Happy

Yeah, you poor, poor souls there in the UK. All that beautiful snow makes for beautiful ice, and all that ice means salt. Shocked In turn, the salt means... well, exactly what you have there.

Really though, it's not to bad to fix. Here's a rough idea of what I would do.

Aye I think its pretty much fooked Laughing

Spent a few hours last Sunday cutting out some new base plates and hammering some 30mm x 3mm thick steel strips into shape to replace the spring locating noggin . Looking like it will work ok when I weld it all up next weekend Very Happy
I`ll add some bracing to the noggin once Ive got it looking something like .

I havn`t got any pics yet as its just a flat plate and a bent bit of steel strip so far.
I`ll hopefully get them welded up next weekend and then the real work can start getting the axle mounted in place then its full steam ahead hopefully . I`ll take loads of pictures as I go and do a proper thread at some point .
I don`t want to start a build thread yet as its gonna be slow going with working 6 days a week meaning I can`t spend as much time on the build as I would like . I`m doing 99% of the work outside so apart from the rust delays Ive got to work round the weather to get anything done Crying or Very sad
