i am going to remove my plastic rear bumper off my vit.
why?
because the brackets a rotted and it currently held on with mud.
i want to fit a slightly heavier duty one and i also have some issues under the bumper which concern me, so need to take it off to look at them.
i also have the body mounted lights to put in it as mine are currently in the bumper.

bumper removal is it just a case of removing brackets and it wil come off.

so lights into the body, i have a set of lights and i am after any one who has done this to give me some pointers and advice before i go and do it and screw up my wiring.

Just as rich says, simple remove two screws on each fog and keep screws, unplug, find the connector to the bumper lights and plug wing lights in,fit wing lights.Mine needed a block under the top clip as the fogs had a plastic clip.Get a flush fit foglight (trailer type £4.99 and screw to door wire through grommets near hinge).Bumper is held on by 4 screws at top and 3 at bottom, maybe 2 clips either side but mine had long since parted company with the wing.

Well I got it off yesterday. No real dramas. Just 4 stubborn bolts holding the tow bar unit in place.
Wiring looks like it has been molested in the past.
Will post pics later. As am doing this on my phone

well i got it off, and its a mass of rot on the bumper frame,
hed a rummage in the hole when the lights came out and found the correct connector in there. just clipped in to replacement lights and alls good. makes a change with the vit Very Happy

just need to have a look at the reverse light now as they dont work and havent for a while.
and to sort some replacement bumper and grind off the remainder of the bracket.

ok so as promised here is the pics

firstly heres the new lights against the old lights.

firstly i removed the chequer plate cover strip from the top of the bumper and then the tow bar assembly, this was a pain as the bolts had stripped threads and were rusted solid.

then undid the screws that held it in place and then off it came.

this is the wiring that greeted me

so i had a fish around behind the fog lights and found the connections for the lights, fitted both and they work.

The bumper metal work is held on by 7 bolts,4 on each chassis end and 2 on the ends at the wing, but had rotted leaving them hanging and 1 in the centre.

For the fog,I used a trailer type one screwed straight onto the back door drivers sidehave now got a sqare number plate which will fit under the door handle in prep for the tank lift.

the main bumper bracket/ metal work was pretty rotten. it was not atatched at either side and can see four bolts in the middle holding it in place, but bit of wobbling and pulling and it snapped off and am now left with the above,
a pic of drivers side mounting

the red arrows show where the four bolts remain and need sorting out. the green squares show where the bracket was rotted through.
and for the fog light/number plate light i have two little ideas i am going to try out. and if they dont work then i will be using one of those bolt on type lights and a square plate

I changed my lights before the bumper, when i took the blanks off I found that the harness terminated at the light fittings and that an extension to the harness fed the bumper, so it was a straight unplug/ plug in job Cool

thats what mine was like, but the extension wiring was shocking to say the least. i just plugged the two ends of the plug together and it was sorted.

the guy who had this car before me had a thing for leds, i have removed over a hundred of them while i have had the car. when you turned them on it was like a giant blue strobe light going off. Very Happy

just one strip of them left to remove when i finally get the front bull bar out ot the way to get at them, but they aint wired up because i have ripped out all the led wiring.

ok problem solved Very Happy
no un bolting no fiddly wiring,.......................it fell off as I was poking it Shocked
a masive panic attack, some quick thinking and a bit of H/D gas pipe and a new bumper was born Cool however it looks skimpy, pick it up and you will know its not,
However I am thinking that I might double it up with top and bottom tubes to create a solid 3 tube bumper or get a bit creative on my design,
The current job is a rip off of the mootara (TM) bumper and the number plate is taped to the back window for legal reasons

You don't need that much strength in the back bumper as that big round rubber air cushion gets hit first when a vit eventully brakes sharp.Mine going to have a slight reposintioning to be a bit more solid for pulling L***r**** out. Twisted Evil

if yiou get a square plate, it sits quite nicely below the rear door handle (mine is butted right up against it, and works well)

funnily i have been working on this again today.

this is a design i am going to go with. the ends will be a bit different and the radius of the bends will depend on what can be achieved with a pipe bender. hopefully 90 at top and bottom meeting in middle

i have incorporated a number plate mount and also the fog lights

will be made out of scaff bar and box section and bolted in to the orginal bumper mount holes. plus some extra bolts around orginal mount.

only question is will the mount be strong enough to mount it and the possiblity of towing it out when stuck

vehicle front,

you can see that the GV rims and suspension has made its self known, plus a minor body lift at the exspense of the vitara plastic, the front bumper is actualy from my old volvo 740,

this shows the forward chasis extensions to accomodate the bumper, they were L shaped steel forklift defences for the racks at work, I just had a better use for them Laughing

side view of the front and the bumper set up, at this point you would be correct in thinking that I am addicted to waxoil, as an ex landy freak I tend to swear by the stuff.

The back bumper taking shape, I have a central (lower) direct to chasis then the upper is just to fill the gap, 2 shorter singles (left and right) will go on the bottom.
The load strap is for towing and not holding it all together.

finaly a rear shot, it needs a coat of paint and it should be ok (lets face it womens make up can be very deceptive, so a lick of paint can do wonders)

any way thats it for now, next trick (after a few glitches have been ironed out) is to put in box steel sills.

The mud flaps dead simple, rubber matting sandwiched between to alloy(free) angles, pop riveted then screwed to body, stenciles for picture.Moved number plate as dropping from rock steps kept bending it up as it was under bumper.now under handle with light under handle.Bumper was strong enough to pull me back onto wheels after my accident Wink

Looking at your bumper design fatboy, you mentioned bike carrying.why don't youput some sliding extensions down side of chassis and some channel across them to carry the bikes.
Zng I made some brackets to lift the front bumper to the body work
