Hi,

I have a 98 Nissan Patrol Y61 estate with a low mileage 2.8 TD engine.
I'd like to change the engine out for something with a little more grunt and less high revving.

I've seen land rovers with GM V8's. Now that looks interesting. How hard to put one into a Y61? Is there a company that does the conversions or a kit you can buy?

I have a few earlier nissan 2.8 & a few 3.3 diesel engines that I bought for another project but the gain isn't worth the bother.

Are there any other conversion worth considering?

Btw, I'm in East Anglia

Thanks for any advice...

Don

Thanks for the reply. I'n looking to find an engine that actually has been fitted to a Y61 and need to find if an installation kit is available.

A V8 sounds great - even a diesel one.

Cheers

Diesel v8 would be awesome, but im not sure there is a car sized one thats easy to get hold of, all seem more industrial.

Hi there bud! I may have a 4.2 6cyl out of a gq that will fit straight in your y61!Tis an awesome motor with no timing arrangements to worry about! Fitting a turbo gives Loads of extra go but you do sacrifice economy! My gq swb standard does better to the gallon than a 300 tdi td5 and Pajero 2.5 so something to think about!!

TD42 will not fit directly on the TD6 (RD28T) gearbox. RD28T gearbox is smaller.

Gearbox for ZD30 and TD42 are identical (although Y60 gearbox has a different lever housing than Y61).

Easiest way to do it (if you canot the gearbox that comes with the TD42) is to find a ZD30 gearbox.

Engine mounts need to be moved forward.

Cheers

Dane

As mentioned above its not a staight fit putting a y60 engoine and box but they do fit. you dont need the zd30 box as the box from the td42 in a y60 will work. I personally wouldnt fit the gmc v8 deisel over the 4.2 turbo nissan engine. I love mine it has more low down grunt and power than you will ever need. It is so torquey that no matter what you put on its back it will just set off on tick over.

The cummings have been fitted to patrols to but they are very heavy and very commercial.

I have 3 friends all with y60 engine and boxes in y61's. All turboed too.

I do know where there is a zd30 auto box if you fancy that behind the td42

To my knowledge, the top of the y60 td42 gearbox has a slighty different mechanical outline. The metal "box" in which the lever is plages is taller on the y60 than on the y61. Although the rest of the box is 100% the same. But this "box" on the top bolts off and could probably be replaced with a top from a y61.

I can get a kit from Australia for fitting a GM 6.2 but I'll need a 3.0 gearbox AND a flywheel for a GM 6.2 V8. I have an engine but it seems a long way to go for I'm not sure what gain. Epic sound, costly installation and bad mpg Sad Anyone got a 6.2 flywheel or suitable gearbox?

Before I go down that road, has anybody fitted an SD33T engine to a Y61 2.8 (I know why would somebody want to but the 3.3T does sound great) ? I have a good SD33T engine here in the yard. Will it mate up to the Y61 gearbox? They do sound great.

I can't get a 4.2 turbo engine here so I'll have to make do the 3.3T or GM V8.

What are your thoughts about performance?

Thanks for any advice.

If you haven't already found them, Brunswick Diesels, in Western Australia, do conversions for all sorts of vehicles, mainly 6.2 and 6.5 litre V8 Chev diesels into Patrols, Cruisers, ect.
