Hi guys,

Time for a pad and disc change, I see on ebay a lot of brembo disc and pads, what are your thoughts? £65 all in, seems like good value to me, could be wrong? any experiences of these?

Cheers

Of course you need to take care when buying these sorts of things because of fakes etc.

Not only that but they don't say in either of the adverts linked to that they will not fit all Jimnys.

The first link does not say anything at all.

The second link gives a clue by saying that the centre is 107mm

There are two fitting for Jimnys - 107mm and 108.3mm

107mm fits up to VIN xxxxx203804
108.3mm fits from VIN xxxxx2038805 onwards.

I was nervous that they could be fake, £65 seems cheap for Brembo stuff? having said that, I guess they are just solid discs, nothing too fancy? what would you guys fit?

For my SJ, a set of pads is £18 and a set of discs it £30, so £65 is a bit more expensive... but maybe not for a Jimny?

I would check out your local Motor Factor for the price of Discs and pads.
eg
Jimny Air Filter at Halfords is around £17 & around £6 from a Motor Factors.

Can the discs not just get a Skim at a Local Mechanical Engineers or a Garage for around £15 for the pair?

Never realised they would do that to discs! halfords prices are terrible, the trade card is great but you never know what you will save, I bought 2pairs of pads from there, £20+ on the shelf, one pair worked out at £8something, the other £6something Surprised bought wipers that worked out at a massive saving of about 60%, wipers for the landy are about £1.60 each! I thought great! Ill buy a set for the astra my G/F had at the time, £25 on the shelf so expected to pay about a tenner - about £23 at the tills!! Brick wall

Cheap buy f you need the £25 ones,
not so cheap if its the £60 discs.

Many many garages are skimming discs almost as a matter of course at service time.
(just another cash raiser these days i think as modern discs look rusty after just a few days of sitting)

Had 2 pairs done just this last few weeks and the place i use,
but it is always an apprentice that is put on them and it is under £20 including VAT.

Obviously not worth having done on the cheap Discs but worth pricing locally if it is just the usual edge on Jimny discs IMO.
Whats the harm in asking locally.

No harm in asking, I've had drums machined in the past.

I fitted Apec discs & pads to mine, were about £50 the set work ok.

Apec is a motorfactors top quality brand, that used to be the cheapest you could get, a bit like Regatta clothing that went from market stalls to almost a designer label.

The brembos sound the right price to me.

£20 to reface a pair of discs is a good price, I wouldn't do it for that, just watch they don't get too thin.

Buy whatever is cheapest. They all have to conform to a standard, and I doubt for that price that they'll be any better than your bog standard pads and discs.

www.skimmydiscs.co.uk/resurfacing.html

Smile What you have never had it done ,or bought a car or bike that it was already done on.
(you might be surprised how often it is done in the car trade then. Wink)

Obviously shagged discs should be replaced, but i bought a 18 month old car with under 5000 miles on it and the first service shows
'front and rear discs grooved & corroded', (vented discs that have sat outside during a winter then been used)
the warranty did not allow for replacement & they got re-faced and are perfect.
There was no need for the discs to be replaced then, and i will replace them next time when they need doing.
The car is under a 3 year warranty & there is no problem with this having been done as the dealership does it on many Used/ex demo cars before re-sale.

I ended up at the motor factors and bought some 'blue print' or something like that pads and discs. I am nervous of fake and cheap brake parts after an incredibly bad experience with a brake servo on my landrover that caused a complete brake failure. It was fitted for 3miles.

If they're skimmed within the wear thickness tolerances i don't see the issue, its not like its a new money saving idea! BITD everything was machined, skimmed etc.etc

Pattern parts from the factors are fine usually, i've used the apec efforts in the past and had problems with the pads hardening and discs warping. I have the discs fitted to my ST170 with ferodo pads and they're fine apart from a bit of fade under hard use. I've used the blueprint stuff for other parts and so far not had any issues.
