sub 3 inch cutting edge does not need a reason to be carried - perfectly legal. Premise ca nstill refuse you entry thoug has they are private property not a public place as such.
As set out in Criminal Justic ACt 1988 section 139
139 Offence of having article with blade or point in public place. E+W(1)Subject to subsections (4) and (5) below, any person who has an article to which this section applies with him in a public place shall be guilty of an offence.
(2)Subject to subsection (3) below, this section applies to any article which has a blade or is sharply pointed except a folding pocketknife.
(3)This section applies to a folding pocketknife if the cutting edge of its blade exceeds 3 inches.
(4)It shall be a defence for a person charged with an offence under this section to prove that he had good reason or lawful authority for having the article with him in a public ****)Without prejudice to the generality of subsection (4) above, it shall be a defence for a person charged with an offence under this section to prove that he had the article with him—
(a)for use at work;
(b)for religious reasons; or
(c)as part of any national costume.
(6)A person guilty of an offence under subsection (1) above shall be liable-
[F1(a)on summary conviction, to imprisonment for a term not exceeding six months, or a fine not exceeding the statutory maximum, or both;
(b)on conviction on indictment, to imprisonment for a term not exceeding [F2four] years, or a fine, or both.]
(7)In this section “public place” includes any place to which at the material time the public have or are permitted access, whether on payment or otherwise.
(8)This section shall not have effect in relation to anything done before it comes into force.
+ 3 inch or locking you need a justifable reason - going fishing might not deamed good reason with the law as other "legal" tools will do the same job.

I have had much experiance with knives. And if your buying one i would opt for Kershaw, there strong, reliable, safe. Most are made with VG10 SS, which is very strong, it holds its edge well and is reasonably easy to sharpen.
For the best knives, if you have the time and patience you should make your own. I have forged my own blades with the help of a friend of mine, in everything from iron to top end stainless damascus supersteel in knives, daggers, sword, spears, axes etc. It is not a quick prosses but you can make a knife unique for yourself. These can be stronger than any mass produced blades depending on materials and cheaper. You also get the satisfaction of creating something your self.
Look at these: ( Around £70 each )
1; Kershaw Lahar
2; Kershaw Groove
3; Buck Kalinga Folding Hunter
4; Gerber SuperGator
5; Buck GutHook Alpha Hunter
6; Kershaw Speed Bump
These i have all owned some and are very good for hunting, servival, fishing, skinning animals, prepareing food. ( never prepare food with a hunting knive that has been cleaned with any form of metal polish etc, it will make you feel quite ill, water and a clean cloth will do with food knives).
Hope this helps people.

you could try coopers of sheffield for a good quality knife. i got my fairburn sykes from there a few years ago and they do a fair few pocket knives. sheffield steel was regarded as the best you could buy at one time.

British Army Clasp knife, from John Nowills in Sheffield. Good strong design, marlin spike for splicing winch line (if you run a synthetic line anyway), and non-locking sub 3" blade so UK legal carry.

Apart from being American I have always liked gerber knives the new bear grylls knives by gerber are good bits of kit
On a side note I had a knife made for me by my dads mate and it's the best knife I've ever owned it isn't a folding knife but it has a ss blade an full tang with a black silica handle it also has a curved blade so can be used for heavy stuff by the handle and delicate skinning at the tip
My dad made him a stock for one of his guns in return
