|
|
|
The web site vegoilmotoring.com states that:
“since July 2007 if you are using/producing less than 2500 litres per year of SVO which is not duty paid then you are not required to pay duty on this fuel”
However, on the HM Revenue & Customs site I’m unable to find any reference to a duty free 2500 litre annual allowance. The HM Revenue site states:
“You can use vegetable oil in your car and mix it with diesel (vegetable oil is generally used as a substitute for diesel) but you will have to make arrangements to pay the Excise Duty to HMRC.”
Please can someone clarify the situation for me
UPDATE:
Looked a little harder on the HM Revenue site and it appears it is legal to use up to 2500 L /yr - I'll be giving it a go...

Quote: | 2.4 What are my obligations?
If you produce 2,500 litres or more biofuels a year, or use 2,500 litres or more of biofuels as motor fuel on which duty has not been paid, you will need to contact us so that we can make arrangements for you to account for the excise duty due on any products set aside, or delivered for use, as a motor fuel.
loads of regs here
Note: If you have produced less than 2,500 litres in the last 12 months, or if you expect to produce less than this amount in the next 12 months, you may be an exempt producer. If you are an exempt producer you are only required to keep production records (see item 2 in the above table). See paragraph 4.2.1 for more information. |

my uncle has a 300tdi and he only puts 10% veggie in winter. and only when it's mild. last week he had to top up with diesel to make starting easier.

Noted; do you know what ratios he runs spring, summer & autumn?
Has he experienced any related issues (to cope with the extra load, thought I'd replace my old lift pump with a shiny new OEM one)

in summer he usually runs at 70%. if going on a long run he ups that to 80%, possibly 90% if it's very hot and he's on a very long run, then adds diesel at the end of his journey to thin it out for starting from cold again.
not sure what he runs spring and autumn. i'd guess somewhere in between depending on ambient temperatures.
he's not said his mpg has got better or worse. when i've got a lift off him the only time i've noticed a difference is in winter when it runs slightly rough (i think the technical term is 'lumpy' ) until it warms up.
you need to change your fuel filter after 500 miles, and carry a spare one as veggie is good for pulling all the crap from the bottom of the tank.

Maybe bulk buying (1000l+) biodiesel would be a better choice for me - need to investigate all the possible options...

Yup, but steer clear of chippys. Palm oil is no good for this type of stuff.

the achiles heel of the 300 tdi on veggy of any ratio is the fuel lift pump...
learn how to change it, carry a spare and convert yours and your spare to jubilee clips instead of olives and carry a spare filter too otherwise happy motoring
add veggy to your ration until she wont start..
latitude dependant but in perthshire mine is twin tanked and starts 100 % of the time, but when i forget to flush it down it will start on 100 % from about april until october..
good luck

Ged, Terence & Psycho, thanks for the guidance – makes for a great forum.
Terence, can you recommend a brand of lift pump that’s more likely to cope with the greater demands of veggy.

Good advice - haven't made the change to veggy yet, but I've just bought a delphi pump to fit as a bit of preventive maintenance. Will keep the old functioning unit onboard (with nuts & olives attached) as a spare.
