Hi guys
Got a problem with the mog and if somone can that'll be great
It's takes a lot to get it started especially if it is cold it looks like the spring is broken on the manifold.
when i do get it running it seems to idle fast and if i give a rev and then come of the gas the revs drop and it stalls but then starts up again with no trouble? could it be the butterfly is stuck.
There is a strong smell of petrol mainly from the exhurst and it back fires when revved hard and also there is a poping comming ether from the manifold or the carb not sure which
.I've tride to adjust the carb but it dosn't make a diferance ifnfact it dose nothing atall?.
could it be the fuel lift pump over fueling or somthing else any advice would be well apreciated.
Thanks for you time
Gary

There's nothing on the carb to adjust for normal running!.

The two screws at the front are for the idle mixture.

Is it running on 6 cylinders? If not then I'd look at the plugs for starters. Mog's do NOT like idling. You can coke up a 404 in several minutes if you just start it and leave it. You'll then drop down on to 5 or 4 cylinders and then you've the unburnt fuel issues (sump filling with petrol).

Have you touched the idle speed screw? Sounds like it's running on not 6 cylinders with the idle speed set too high. You've also got a problem with the cold running flap.

I would suggest the following.

1/ Undo the 4 bolts which hold the carb on and take it off, unclip the throttle linkage. With a torch have a look down the manifold at that flap thing (the pre heater for cold running). Wire it into the closed position.

2/ Put the carb back on. Gently wind in the 2 idle mixture screws till there's a little bit of pressure (don't wind in too hard since you'll damage the end of the needle) and turn out 2 1/2 turns on each one - This is approximately the correct position.

3/Take out the spark plugs and clean them well. In fact, if you can be bothered and your using civilian leads buy some new BP6ES plugs.

4/ Set the points to 0.5 and the plugs to 0.4 (think it's that way around).

5/ Grease the throttle linkage.

Put it all back together and see how it is.

O.k your spot on number 3 pot is not firing balck wet plug, all the others are really good so cleaned it up and will put it back together tomorow and see what happens.
If it's not just a fouled plug what you thoughts on what could be the problem?
Cheers

Check you plug leads and distributer cap are ok. plus it is very important for a 404 exhaust system to be air tight, they frequently leak around the joints and especially at the manifold by the Y pipe.
Don't worry 404 engines are easy to sort.

Very Happy

Do you have any air leaks around the manifolds?

Plug gap, bad lead, if it's one cylinder it's either a leak or a spark issue.

Hi,

I had the same problem with my 404. It turned out to be a sunk float which was causing the carb to overfual.

Regards,

So just spent the better prt of two days stripping and rebuilding the mog.I changed the inlet/exhurst Gasket striped and rebuilt the carb again as there was a vacum leak so made all new gaskets,nd went through the ignition system again and the result:- carb is no longer leaking, the inlet gasket which it turned out was leaking but now has a new gasket (luckily I had one) and is now longer leaking. So the engine is ticking over nice and smooth but still has a little pop from the exhurst every now and then. The problem now comes when I rev the engine.when I press the exclerator the revs drop and somtimes the engine stalls? when I drive it it has a real lack of power and still one of the plugs is wet with fuel so any thoughts?.I'm not sure if the ignition system i.e the dizzy cap isn't to blame?.

It's about £70 for a full rebuild kit.

Get a light and a mirror, take off the air inlet and push down the accelerator pump. If you can see a dribble of fuel coming out then this is bad. If you can see a fine mist then this is good.

If one of the pump jets is a little blocked a dribble will soot up the plugs on one bank pretty quick.

Did you clean with carb cleaner when you had it all apart?

I made some headway yesterday turns out there was a list of problems including gaskets leaking 1 spark plug had failed I.E got a spark from it but it was not a stronger enough spark which is strange as they are only around three months old and the right plugs for the mog?.Some of the leads were in not such a good condision the rotor arm was bent ( I've never seen that before?)So I'm thinking the dizzy cap needs changing to.
