When i've done it, i've pulled out the ball joint itself out, pushed it through the top the wrong way round and with a little tap the top seat drops out.

Then i've assembled by drifting the seat in, arranging the parts and using water pump pliers to squash it together whilst i put the circlip in, though that mastic gun method looks much less fiddly, i wish i knew about it!

for the differance in price and the time on your back i wouldn`t bother with the ball joint , better to just replace the full arm .

i use a grinder to cut most of the way through then a cold chisel and a hammer to finish it off , you can also lossen the nut and with a good lenth of pipe to apply pressue just give it a good belt and it should come off .

go to the local carboot sale this weekend and have a look around for a decent "G" clamp for a couple of quid (record brand are usually ok).
make the top bit forked to go round the ball joint shaft, job done.
the screw up bit clamps the ball joint base disc and as you screw it up, you can then get the circlip in the grove. ( get the circlip on the screw shaft before you start!).
keep your face out of the way, incase it all springs apart. Wink

TBH id find a local friendly land rover specilist to pop a new ball joint in, less hassle and in the long run cheaper than trying to bodge it.

When i was in the workshop i knocked up a set of pullers on the lathe and made a press for holding the now joint against the spring, Could do the whole job in a few minuets. Its so quick we often did the job for the price of the new ball joint and a BIG bag of donuts.

If you weren't at the other end of the world i'd pop up and do it for you.
