Probably Axial SCX-10

Anything else and it'll be too cheap to do anything with or by the time you make it capable of taking shocks and boots etc you'll have spent as much as an SCX-10 and even then it'll probably break.

Sadly expect to pay a couple hundred quid for one, and add another 50 or so on top of that once you've bought a couple of batteries and charging gear.

(this will be mega good offroad btw)

Try not to be tempted by the Newbright models as the only reason to buy them (and I've bought several) is to take the shell off and use it on your SCX chassis (or whatever). The shell is the only decent part and if you get one you'll be disappointed at how crap it is.

Very nice those things I've often been tempted by them!

I run SCX-10 honcho (kit version) and an Xtrail chassis with all metal running gear (apart from axles I really don't like those metal axles so far they all seem to "stick" on rocks) the xtrail I built up out of (mostly) spare parts.

The early SCX (the one that looks like the d90) do come up a fair bit on the eblag or you could try the ukrcrc forum.

For a second hand one expect to pay around 120 / 130 quid or thereabouts but bear in mind these things are just about full on scale replicas of a 1:1 and can end up costing just as much, the two I've got (three if you count the one I turned into a bag of parts) I could easily sell and buy another 1:1 with Laughing

What you need to bear in mind is to run these things you need not only the vehicle itself but also:

ESC (electronic speed controller - makes it go)
TX/RX gear (radio control - makes it go and provides steering etc)
Motor
Batteries
Charger
Possibly Replacement steering servo

That is (in a nutshell) what you need... Now, a cheap waterproof ESC can cost anywhere from 25 quid and be fine, a cheap TX/RX about 40/50 quid (you need one with at least two channels, forward and backward, left and right) motors are subjective, I use cheap ones (15 quid ish) and they do the trick just fine until I burn them out then it's nice and cheap to replace, Batteries (whole different ballgame this, you can go for NiMh or LiPo, NiMh being the cheaper option but a battery on ebay will be about a tenner for a 3000 / 5000 mah, which gives about an hour of running per battery depending on setup), charger (again depends on if you went NiMh or LiPo but probably about 20 / 30 quid) servos are pennies but you want the metal geared ones which are about 7 quid each).

Problem with these things is it's just like a 1:1, how far do you want to go with it. You can go crazy and spend a fortune or you can cobble bits together over time. Anything that falls into the fabled "hobby grade" won't be "cheap" but it depends on what you get... If you bought a second hand SCX 10 with sundries you'll probably only need to buy a new battery and servo (servos go quite easily on these things due to the nature of what you're doing with them, but they're easy to replace and cost hardly anything).

If I was to look at the setup of my SCX-10 honcho and total it up...

Truck itself (350 quid when I bought it as one of only 6 available in the UK at the time Laughing)
35t motor (I think I paid about 25 quid, it's gone through several but they are serviceable items you can replace brushes etc)
2.4hgz tx/rx gear with 8 channels (the more channels the more extras your truck can run such as a scale working winch etc 200 quid, 2.4ghz equipment doesn't 'glitch' that is to say when there's other signals nearby they don't get in the way of your FM transmitter, which is prone to glitching)
Heavy duty dual rate shocks (40 quid)
Scale winch (loads on eblag about 20 quid)
Axial NVS (a controller that turns lights on and off etc 35/40)
High Torque metal gear servo (I buy the cheap versions of this and have never had any problems with them, about 7 quid each)
I've probably got a lot more that I've forgotten but all in 500, 600 quid probably more.

But now I can do stuff like this (my youtube channel):

http://www.youtube.com/user/stutheitguy?ob=0

It's quite a helpful "scene" the scale rc truck lot, if you got into it I have many bits I'll send you in the post to help you get started out, but bear in mind these things do break just the same as a 1:1 and you're much more likely to break things with a scale truck because you'll be doing stuff that you wouldn't do in your 1:1 (well most of us anyway Laughing )

Here's a couple of pics of mine:

Oooh expensive!

This one I bought the chassis for 40 quid and used parts I had around the workshop to build up, it performs really well:

(both of the trucks are full on difflocked mud spitting nut jobs and I roll them all the time smashing expensive scale parts left right right and centre, but hey part of the fun Laughing )

thanks for that stu it was very very helpfull. I would not be looking to build anything of that spec i wouldnt think. I mean i wouldnt want a winch or the best of everything i just want a truck that looks sorta like a land rover but doesnt look cheap and tacky.

I wouldnt go as far as putting insides in and all the roll cages and things like some of you guys they look fantastic but i just havnt got the patiant. In all honesty i would love to make a scale of my disco but the only shell i have found if very primitive and doesnt really look like a disco.

This will be the first ever thing i build as a rc if i build it and i have not got a clue what is what and where to get it the cheapest. So any info anyone can offer will be extreamly welcomed.

thanks again Bailey

Hey no problems mate, it's better to try and suss how expensive things are going to get before launching into them.

You can do this sort of thing on a tight budget, I've only spent a fortune because I've learned over time what's best for my setup...

Let me look in my garage of destiny for you over the weekend, I may be able to help somewhat.

I have a LR3 shell I'd be willing to part with for the price of a pint of beer and postage but they are "heavy" shells imo and I use the lexan ones for lightness and prolonged run time.

If I had to do this on a budget I reckon you could probably do everything you needed to get started for < 200 quid

This is the popular new bright LR3 shell:

I have two of those, both orange, you see them in asda occasionally for about 40 quid, and I keep on buying them then tossing the "rc truck" bit of it because all I need it for is the shell.

Cheapest for a running truck will more than likely be ebay, or modelsport uk forum.

Modelsport UK (based in otley yorkshire) sell everything you need but obv it's brand new... a link to a brand new "dingo" (read D90)

http://www.modelsport.co.uk/axial-scx10-w-dingo-body-1-10th-scale-electric-4wd-truck-builders-kit/rc-car-products/367215

That's handy because it shows you all the associated bits you need (the stuff I was on about earlier)

If you were looking for the budget option then I'd keep my eye on ebay for one of those (the earlier ones were in silver)

I will ask about in my circles of RC mates and see what's kicking around you never know!

Hey it's no problem mate people helped me out when I was getting started.

I don't use the LR3 shell at all, I have one sitting there unpainted, it's a smidge rough around the edges but it might as well be in use.

I have one unpainted one still sitting on the newbright running gear, just never got around to taking it off, the orange is more metallic but these things can be painted whatever colour you want there's a whole heap of knowledge on painting them right.

This one was a clear lexan shell that I masked and painted:

Here's one I painted that started out black but this time with a hard body that I stole off a newbright model:

You can choose whatever you like.

I have a chassis that you could have but it's a pretty tricky thing to get them together because there's all these trick linkages that need to mount onto the axles which you've also got to build. I think you'd be better off to try and get a cheaper ready to go setup if you really wanted one, that way you get to see it go at least once before you break it Wink

It depends on how you build them as to how tough they'll be but be prepared to chew through those steering servos Very Happy

End of the day if you want something that will last and do all sorts get one of those axial trucks and they'll see you right, everyone runs them (or setups made of axial parts...) because axial is universally pretty good stuff with loads of spares for resonable prices on ebay and the like.

I'm a Yorkshire man so I don't like spending money! IMHO the best starter 'base' for a man on a budget is a Losi mini rock crawler, I bought mine for £100 and I've probably ploughed that and a bit more into it to get it looking right. Although I know it will never be as competent as the axial off road mine was more about looks than ability.... (ability can be upgraded but there isn't as large an after market part base for the losi)

I don't know what sort of body you would get or if the wheel base would be right for a landrover but it was spot on for my suzuki 1/10 scale build
