Hi all, I'm new to this, but am looking into buying my first 4x4, I've narrowed it down to either a Nissan Terrano 2 2.7tdi 5dr or an Isuzu Trooper 3.0 5dr. I'll have around £2500 to spend on the truck and want it for everday use hense they are both 2 and 4wheel drive so slightly better on fuel, and will be used for towing and exploring/green laning.
I'm swaying towards the terrano as it seems from owner reviews its more reliable but the tropper is cheaper to buy but has had an injector problem that is quite costly, although should have been sorted under warranty.

What are peoples thoughts and opinions.

Thanks for all your help

Welcome to the forum.

I would sway towards the Trooper because IMO they are more reliable.
I would forget about being more economical because they are part time 4wd.
They are no more economical than a Disco with permanent 4wd.
Just possibly less rusty.

Those that have and use these vehicles will be along to disagree hopefully.

I would look at a Mitsubishi as well, and a Kia/Hyundai.
Like Isuzu's tho.

have fun looking and just find the best you can without worrying which brand it is.
Check how the insurance prices compare.

Insurance is about £300 cheaper on the terrano but as the terrano's are more expensive to buy it roughly equals out.
Looked at shoguns but for a new shape there out of my price range im afraid and insurance is a lot more too.
Am looking at a 1999 or 2000 model in either model to avoid the expensive tax of 2001

Thanks for your input

yes to the trooper but stay well away from the 3ltr. the one to have is the 3.1 or even a 2.8 but not the 3 ltr.

i was looking at new tow vehicles the other day, on paper the trooper is alot gruntier, 156bhp and 332nm torque against the terrano's 123bhp and 278nm but there was/is a big problem with injectors on the 3.0 isuzu
but personally i wouldnt right then off as a choice because the issue is covered by a recall and is normally just a case of new injectors, i gather the big problems come if nothing is done about the problem and the sump fills with diesel and then they go bang. they get alot of bad press because of this hence the cheap price to buy. trooper is a fair bit bigger so laning it may get more scratched/damaged but obviously has more luggage space. swings and roundabouts really, sure you could buy a trooper thats been sorted and have years of trouble free driving or a real dog of a terrano and have no end of problems!

thanks, thats what kind of got me thinking, with the trooper having a bit more grunt under the bonnet, but then a re-map on the terrano would possibly match it. its wierd you say about sizing with the trooper being bigger, it seems a bit wider but the terrano is longer so i guess like you said, swings and roundabouts.
I am a bit weary with the injector problem of the troopers. Even if it has been solved how quickly was it solved and has it caused any other damage that hasn't shown itself yet??
The 3.1 is a potential option aswell, but i do prefer the newer 1's and the terranos, to that shape, but i shall have to take them all for a test drive and go from there.

Thanks for your help

re the 3 ltr trooper, there is an isuzu specialist in south wales retro fitting new 2.8 engines in to 3 ltr troopers, think they suffer with more than just injecter problems.

The first Troopers are now 20 years old.(1992 or there about)
£2500 gets you a very nice 2002/3

If all recall work was done then they have been going for the past 5 years and you are now looking at the type of thing you need to look out when buying any 2-3 grand 4x4.

Condition & if it has faults, or possible faults, if you can fix it or afford to
have it fixed.. (or have a friend that can fix it and get parts)

Cylinder heads/engines, drivetrain & rust problems are the costly & vehicle killers if you can not get fixed cheaply.

Have you looked in the Section at Maverick/Terrano's, common faults etc.?

I would look at Troopers.
Take someone that knows 4x4's and Part Time 4x4's and just find the best you can. Wink

There are always genuine good vehicles out there,
but more cr4p that someone tries to punt on sadly because of something that worries them like jumping transfer boxes and noisy diffs/lsd's.

What about a terrano 3.0? you can get one around the £2.5 k mark
My Terrano 3.0 td will out pull any Trooper 3.0.

They are standard 154bhp but have more torque than the trooper.
You can pull out of a hole on tick over.

Granted mines running at 184bhp.
Trooper's can tow 3.5 tonne braked
Terrano 3.0, tow 3 tonne braked
The 3.0 Trooper engine is adog, I know this from experience, stay clear.
Blimey, if you put the wrong oil in, they will not start.
The 3.1 is good engine though thirsty and lacks power, Mk3 was 125 bhp.

they didn't bring the 3.0 terrano in until 2002 which puts it in the higher tax bracket, thats why i was looking at a 2.7 and possibly get it remapped to match the standard 3.0 performance.

Whats the terrano like to live with?

I have an 04 plated Terrano 3.0 and certainly don't pay the higher tax for it.

As for living with it, I love it. None of these trucks are going to be economical purely because of what they are. I get mid twenties from mine, but then I don't really pootle and I may have a couple of small fuelling issues which may effect economy slightly. Some owners on the Nissan4x4 forum claim 30+ from theirs.
I find mine to be a very comfortable cruiser and can be hustled along B roads too.
The only thing annoying me just now is a faulty high pressure oil switch, but this is a known issue and is relatively easily sorted, although I haven't done mine yet.
As for off road, I've had no problems. Slightly road biased rear tyres haven't slowed things down too much in the mud - as soon as I feel any wheel spin, engage 4wd and the AT2's up front drag me out.

Unfortunately I can't compare it with the Trooper, but so far I can't fault the Terrano.

Cheers,

John.

go for the 2.7 if you do, engine parts are usually a little cheaper and easier to get. if it needs any work doing on the engine there are some tasks that can take longer on the 3.0 (nearly twice in some cases).

Also the 2.7 timing is gear driven, not sure about the 3.0?

Any work doing on the 3.0 engine? like what?
Servicing is a doddle, heater plugs easy, and timing chain.
I know the 2.7 is good, nut they do lack power compared with the 3.0, even with a remap, it will never match the torque.
