i have just bought a new sj trialer chassis which has hilux axles. it has manual locking front hubs. i was wondering if the rear diff from a surf will bolt in. would i need the surf half shafts or would the hilux ones work. i can get pic of the hilux rear axle if any help. many thanks tim

yes a surf rear diff will bolt straight in, just make sure they are the same ratio Wink i had surf 4.88 lsd's front and rear in my old hilux

no you shouldn't have any steering problems as the wheels can still turn at different speeds

I also have a pair of hilux axles waiting for a project to stick them too! Very Happy can anyone tell me what series/model surf have the lsd's on front and back so i can keep my eye out for some?

all surfs have l.s.d's in the back, none have them in the front it's just the diff ratio that varies amongst different age surfs, a surf front diff won't fit your hilux solid axle anyway as its a 7.5" diff compared to the ussual 8" Wink

right you are, what would people do without forums!! lol! so am I right in thinking that a rear diff from a surf will fit into my rear? and i dont know if im reading right that a rear surf diff will fit in my front casing??

Not all Surfs have LSDs in the rear.

My 1992 2.4 SSRG had one but my 1994 3.0 SSRX does not.

Best to double check when buying the axle...

I always thought all Surfs had them too, but it turns out not to be the case...

surf axle is a bit wider than the pick up rear axle it will make the back about the same width as the front. pick up axles from mk4 on are also wider same as surf width and some of them had e locker but i don't know which models had these.
