hi there after buying my disco with a lift i woundering if all or most have a similar problem, when changing down from 5th to 4th you have to go for 3rd then 4th, its not really a massive problem just woundering if theres a easy fix or if its just a landrover comedy gear change problem sort of thing ,,,,cheers

Not sure what G/box you may have (maybe R380?)

Maybe this link may help?

What exactly happens if you dont go via 3rd, is it just difficult to find?
my guess would be bias plate and or springs need replacing/resetting, easy diy job done from inside the Disco

I have the exact same problem in my 300 she has a 1" body lift which caused this problem i unscrewed the centre console and went up the road and the problem seemed top be resolved so will have look into modifying it this weekend.

Do you have a problem with reverse as well?

Why would it be down to the lift?? Doesn't make sense that.

For my money the bias plate sounds the more likely cause. Its £5 for the part and less than an hour of your time. And best of all you can take the console off to check before you buy the new plate and still be able to drive it around.

Hi if you can tell us the suffix of the box it would be easier to ident the syncro type, eg a J suffix is definately early and the prob is most likely the worn syncro /baulk ring slot, your method of nudgeing 3rd would support this theory. Another common prob on the Disco gear lever is, the centering springs wear a groove in the side of the boss on the gear lever and this causes incorrect positioning of the 3/4 position.

the 1" body lift has (from what I can gather) caused the centre console also to be raised, so the block part way down gear lever is catching the console therefore not allowing it to come all the way back hence why on mine reverse doesnt always want to go in and once in stay in.

OK, that makes sense for a BODY lift, but the original post said "Lift" no mention of body, so my assumption (as its by far the most common) was a suspension lift so that would make no difference to the transmission.

Exactly the same problem with mine. Going 5th to 4th have to give it a nudge to 3rd and shes straight in otherwise it feels like there is nothing there. Reverse is fine though, jumps from 2nd every now and then. 3" suspension lift, no body lift.
Be nice to get it sorted on the cheap, so whats the bit you talk about? Any chance of a pic please?
