First thing is a Brain, (& use it)
Maps previously marked up AND CHECKED to note which lanes you can legally drive and which you can't.

As for physical equipment, it depends how deep your pockets are, but as a MINIMUM I'd go for:.......................

A 4 metre long tow strap.
A 2 metre long tow strap,
Half a dozen tested shackles.
A spade.
That's as a minimum, you can build up on that as and when cash becomes available.

Then the usual stuff you'd need for a vehicle breakdown anywhere, jack, tools, mobile etc.

Not going to launch into a lanes ethics thing but yes make sure you've checked and double checked it's legal to drive and you've left word of your intended routes.

I carry far too much and I need to rationalize the gear but I carry:

Spade
Waffles
4m Tow Strap
"box-o-shackles" (various sizes)
Heavy Duty Bottle Jack
HiLift Jack
Waterproof Torch (spare battery)
Set of tools
Fire Extinguisher (get a good sized one!)
Compressor for airing back up after airing down
Emergency gear (high vis, pack mars bars, cartons of juice, blankets, waterproofs, medical kit for yourself and another for someone else, fire lighting tools)

Mostly though you'll find you're lugging this stuff around for nothing, it's when you need it you're glad you packed it. I'll assume you will have mobile phone etc and if you're out with a mate distribute the load!

I don't bother carrying all of that if I'm just going about day to day, I carry a limited kit for that of just my vehicle toolkit and bottle jack and limited emergency gear (I always have medical kits on me)

Used to be with AA until they left Me, my Wife and 3 month old daughter on the side of the m5 for 3 & 1/2 hours in the rain. Now with the RAC but not had to use them yet.

Also consider a roll of Gaffa and steel foil tape, pen knife and old towels and rags as well as heavy duty and surgical gloves!
