need to wire up alt on 300tdi disco for project vehicle.
its got thick brown with ring terminal an end, thin brown/yellow in middle, end one is white, both these are only 2" long been cut off.
looking in haynes manual thick brown runs to neg on batt.
b/y runs to batt pos.
white runs to warning light then to batt pos via ignit switch.
is that right?
always thought thick ran to pos on alts.
cheers

I don't have a disco diagram to hand, though I doubt they changed the wiring conventions from the classic range rovers (for which I have several official diagrams).
The thick brown goes to the starter motor solenoid (so indirectly connected to battery positive terminal). Rather than have a lot of separate power wires directly onto the battery terminal, the have one wire from battery to starter motor terminal and route all other power wires from there.
Brown/yellow goes to the ignition warning light on the dash.
The white wire (has a slate or grey tracer on range rovers) also goes to the dash and is the feed to the rev counter. Alternator still works without this connected, just the rev counter doesn't work.

I didn't check the route of the other wires when I changed a disco alt but this is deffo correct right down to the grey trace on a 200tdi.

just looked white as got grey tracer.
thick brown runs across front of engine under injection pump so assume it needs to run to batt pos?

Routing the think brown wire direct to the battery should be fine. I suspect the reason most manufacturers connect it to the starter motor instead is just convenience when they are made. The engine and gearbox are built up as a sub assembly with a lot of the wiring already connected before its fitting to the chassis.
