well it might be worth you looking at a winch then, how about to simulate a winch, try stacking/hanging bricks or other weights off the front bumper, if that helps correct the way the springs sit with the 2 inch spacers on, you know you need a winch!

drove round the pay and play site yesterday with only my rear wheels driving :s
now and again id get some lound clunks/bangs and id have 4 wheel drive for a few seconds that back to rears.
driveshafts are fine, diff case looks fine, do you think it could be my diff is nackered or transfer box not engaging properly?
is it worth me dropping the front diff oil to check that first see if theres anything in it, or is there another simple way of checking wether its diff or t/box

when you say drive shafts fine , have you removed and checked?
do you have up and down movement in the front prop could be diff, i very much doubt its t case as i never managed to break one in 7 or 8 years of vitara ownership (offroading)
i would start with the front axle before you go too deep.
check the front free wheeling hubs and work to the centre

not since sunday, but the day before i went offroading the driveshafts were off, and they were absolutley fine.
just lay under it, and theres no play in the front prop, tried moving it up and down turned it ect and tried again, theres probably a fraction of a mm play in it?
it doesnt have any free wheeling hubs.

very odd, sounds almost like an output from the transfer gears has broken, if you can safely get all 4 wheels off the ground and turn the engine over it will show you if the t box is to blame, in which case new gearbox
What I believe is more likely by the description that it works one moment then not the next is that your front diff is smashed up inside, maybe it has never had its oil changed, or got mud/water inside and properly destroyed the gears (or most of the teeth off the gears.
Interesting problem! Let us know the culprit!
