Hello all,
Was thinking of doing the 8 speed mod on my 404 - wondering, has anyone a spare lever assembly (forward/ reverse lever) that I could buy please? Also - need one wheel nut - any help much appreciated. Send me a PM and I will get in touch. Thanks Will

You don't need to add another lever for the 8 speed, and try westfield for a wheel nut.

Correct - no PTO lever. Good news - the wife found the wheel nut stuck in the mud - I had been looking for hours.

But you don't need a 2nd lever for the high low shift, can all be on the main gear lever with the first 4 on a reverse pattern.

not sure what you meen the mod requires the first two of the six gate paturn blanking off leaving four gates so thats four shift positions so you have the forward and reverce lever but you also need another lever to switch between the high/low gears unless you have found a way to to use just the one lever to operate four low gears four high gears and the reverce gears aswell have you any pics/diagrams you could share so i can update the info i have on the octotron mod

There's an even simpler mod where you cut an 'H' gate to the left of first and second. It gives you third, fourth, first, second, fifth, sixth, seventh, eighth in that order. No second lever needed.

As stated - the mod I had seen details of retained just a H pattern with an additional selector for the high and low ratio. I liked the idea of this mod as have found it awkward sometimes going from the low to the high ratio gears on the main gear selector and the retension of a logical gear selection order. The modifications to the shift plate also look easier - welding a plate on to block the current low range positions instead of cutting further indents.

Yes, exactly.
If there's an issue going between low and high, have you tried greasing the shifter mechanism?

Hi - taken the shift plate out today. I can see how the method works by reducing to a single H pattern and an additional lever. Unable to see how you could do it with additional gate?? You must retain the original mechanism on top of the plate to activate the high and low mechanism. Please explain

Hi folks,
Yep I have done this mod, took a quick pic today and added the shifter positions (must have too much time on my hands today )
As you can see, Forward/ reverse lever has not changed, PTO lever is fitted in the standard place having removed the blanking plate.
High/ Low is selected by moving the main gearlever sharply to the left or right - as normal. Yes I know gear positions are a bit odd, but thats just the way it works out, you soon get used to it
regards Mike

Finished the 8 speed conversion - decided to go with the lever - sourced a brand new one from VK Cars for 46 euros inc postage.
