12,000 miles a year @ 30mpg = 400 gallons @ £6.20 = £2480
12,000 miles a year @ 35mpg = 343 gallons @ £6.20 = £2126
10,000 miles a year @ 30mpg = 333 gallons @ £6.20 = £2064
12,000 miles a year @ 45mpg = 266 gallons @ £6.20 = £1649
12,000 miles a year @ 50mpg = 240 gallons @ £6.20 = £1488

*£2480 divided by 365 = £6.80 a day*
£2126 divided by 365 = £5.82 a day
£2480 divided by 360 = £6.89 a day in diesel

*£1488 divided by 365 = £4 a day*
Do you want to run a 50mpg eco box to save £3 a day if you do 12,000 miles a year.
£1000 a year saved going from a Defender to a Astra diesel maybe & you have to buy & up keep the piece of cr4p.

I think i am saying drive less,
or lighten you vehicle, take out & off everything you dont need to carry everyday
& pump up the tyres a little, or change it for something that can do 45 mpg on better.
Maybe even run it on Veg oil.

How much do Ashcroft Transmissions recon that can be gained in MPG? because a Freelander or a RR with one propshaft fitted saves nothing on fuel.

I assume this one:
http://www.ashcroft-transmissions.co.uk/index.p...amp;productId=254

The kit costs £170, plus shipping.
Using George's example figures above, a quick calculation of recouping that cost in one year's motoring of 12000 miles means the kit will have to give a 3mpg increase.
Is that feasible? I found using FWHs on my SIII makes next to no difference to MPG.

As George says, given careful jettisoning of unnecessary weight, a change of driving style, maintaining your vehicle, and the cost of decent oils and filters at service time, an increase close to that can be achieved for far less.

What engine do you have? If you have a 200/300tdi you can save a fair bit of the cost of fuel by buying neat veg oil. Even more if you can get hold of used veg oil and have the time, space and patience to filter it.

Hi If you want to fit freewheel hubs to save fuel it is essential to fit the freewheel hubs, if you dont you are still driving the front diff, but backwards, via the wheel and this is less efficient than driving it from the gearbox as it was designed. Regards Ian Ashcroft

Cany ou do that again but go down to single figures for those of us that still run V8's Smile

FWH or part time offers no advantage at all for anything in my experience. I've got more than 60 Land Cruisers and each and every one has the hubs unlocked all the time and I've still got about 60 gubbed sliding joints on the front propshafts because they rattle and flog out instead of turning all the time. I still have to change front CV's and diffs just from rattling around all the time. I wouldn't mind so much if they had earned their keep!!

The permanent 4x4 is just better for everything and low box reversing a trailer will soon have your half shafts and wallet complaining with part time.

we do not claim any figures at all, most customers want them so they can run the LT230 as part time 4 wheel drive in a series with the stock series 'UJ' type front axle,

I think AVM did develop the kit for econmy when used with the free wheeling hubs but I have no idea what difference it makes, minimal I would have thought.

The ONLY advantage I can see to part time 4WD is you'll be able to exit roundabouts sideways in the wet Very Happy

I would like it the other way about, so it unlocked the rear axel, so I had awsome turning on my rear fiddle brakes Cool

I suspect some of those american competition rock crawlers do this?

I drove back from Wales a few times like that, Discos will spin the front wheels helplessly out of roundabouts with comedy understeer when front wheel drive...

only way you might get a bit more mpg is the roverdrive overdrive but at over a grand that's a lot of fuel

LR stopped ofering the free wheel hubs on 110 not long after it came on the market as 1 - nobody was buying the free wheel hub option & 2 the 110 was designed to drive all 4 wheels just as the RRC was.
