What current draw does the heater have?? You can get 12 to 24 volt converters but they tend not to have to high a current output. You can set up dual alternators but you need to ensure the positive side is fully isolated.

Is it an electric heater or just an electric blower?

Have you tried connecting it to 12 volts to see if it works? You might be surprised!

I would rig up a 24V supply using two car batteries and measure the current taken. That would allow the right decision to be made.

You might consider a 12V to 240V inverter. Then a suitable 24V adapter.

The timer/igniter circuit on these heaters shouldn't draw too much current and 12V to 24VDC converters are available. Is it an Eberspacher (spelling) heater? If so, it may be dual voltage as they are now popular in motor homes and camper vans.

I believe you can charge a totally isolated 24 volt system by the 12 volt car electrics. You fit a timer and alternately charge the 12 volt batteries in turn. Just like you were taking turns to charge two cars with flat batteries with jump leads. The theory is sound, but no one will try it Confused Pussies

Or: The glow plug is the problem, as it's 24volt. We didn't think it senced the current at the controller, so it could be replaced with a 12volt glow plug driven by a relay from the 24volt circuitry. As the fan doesn't use much power, it should be okay being powered by a 12-to-24 converter.

Or: A friends canal boat nearly sucessfully charged batteries off a 240volt battery charger. So a small 24volt charger should run off a good inverter. But the switchmode system of the charger wasn't that keen on the square wave output of the inverter? Washing machines wern't happy either.

But when all said and done, the 24volt erbaspacer works bettter than the 12volt, which I have 2 of, and both drop out on startup with a slightly low battery Sad

So I got this; http://www.lockgate-stoves.co.uk/ and it doesn't use leccy Very Happy Though not much use while moving, it's a good static heater Cool

12 to 24 volt step up inverter link http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/12V-24V-VOLTAGE-CONVE...33#ht_1530wt_1163
240v ac to 12vdc inverter http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Input-AC-200-240V-Out...31#ht_1726wt_1163

Which ever way you do it you need to find the current draw of the heater if you go down the 240 to 24 volt route as if you overload the 24v inverter you could also screw up the 240v inverter, you also need to ensure that the 240v inverter you have would provide enough power for the heater and other 240 items at the same time.

24v Eberspacher CANNOT be economically converted from 24v to 12v...
Its not worth it.

I looked at this for fitting my 24v eber to my fourtrak.

This was the thread
http://forum.difflock.com/viewtopic.php?t=21087&highlight=

I never did it, I bought a Soft top Landrover 109, which needed the heater more than the fourtrak!

Happily the Landy was ex army and was already 24v!
