I have a couple of questions regarding the 8 speed conversion which I cannot find answers to from previous threads.
As I understand it, you end up with 4 low ratio gears and 4 high ratio gears, so I guess the extra 2 gears gained from the conversion are 3rd and 4th in low ratio.
Will all 4 low ratio gears be available in reverse.
What are the new ratios, is 4th low much lower or higher than 1st high etc.
Any help will be much appreciated.
The reason I am considering the conversion is as follows.
My V8 mog based buggy has less weight than a standard 404 and more power, nearly all of my off-roading is done in 3rd gear (1st high). I can get plenty of momentum in this gear to get me out of tricky situations. When I need to reverse it is a pain in the arm having to mess with two levers and the wheels rotate at some lackadaisical speed while the engine is revving its nuts off resulting in no acceleration and no momentum.
I need higher reverse gears.

Andy

Yes, all in reverse.

Simplest way is to just cut away the shift plate to the left of 1>2 so you end up with

3>4, 1>2 >>> 5>6, 7>8 if that makes sense (low ratio being a mirror of high on the shifter)

The gear ratios fall

1, 2, 3, 5, 4, 6, 7, 8 so you've time to move from 4th, through the gate and into 5th whilst the revs are dropping and you've not lost momentum.

I've not done the conversion since I don't have a spare shift plate, and I'm reluctant to take a grinder to the current one with no way of sorting if I get it wrong, but I've read the documentation time and time again.

Yep, Dx is right, you do get the two extra gears in reverse, really usefull too. I use 2nd and 3rd (low) most of the time offroad.

Dx - its quite an easy conversion to do, Like you, I read up on it beforehand and looked at all the pics, but to be honest it makes much more sence when you take the top off the box and have a look with you own eyes, it all becomes clear Rolling Eyes

Really worthwhile conversion - do it Cool

Mike, if you do it the way in which the first 4 gears are a mirror, I take it that means that the PTO still works? As in that 2nd lever doesn't cut across the shift plate in that mentaly complex version of getting the other 2 gears?

Dx,
I've got a working Pto on my set up, (which runs a hydraulic pump)
The pto lever is in the standard position and works in the normal way.

Brilliant. Well done guys.
I might have a bit of bother with the gear lever hitting the side of my leather recaro when in 4th (furthest left and back) but I will overcome this.
Where can I find detailed pics and description of the conversion to give me an idea of where to start.

Cheers. Andy.

Pop over to Benzworld and look for any post by me, in my signature I've a link to the service manual which should have a section on this. Worth having anyway.
