hi all, i need some underbody protection, as its getting torn up in the ruts in the forest. i have some chequerplate and some angle iron. really i just wanna protect the transfercase as its a bit vunerable. has anyone done similar?
also ive ordered some 6.5 80 15 dumper tyres, - but now im having a bit of a freakout, as i dunno if theyre gonna be tall enough. i can change the order. does anyone know how tall these are?
regards,
Ned .

I am not 100% sure of the height of the tyres but if it is an 80% profile of 6.5" wide then the tyre wall will only be 5.2" high which would give you an overall diameter of 25.4" (5.2" top and bottom plus 15" wheel). This would not be very high at all in my opinion. Even less than my standard tyres which are about 28-29 inch high. I am running 31" tyres at the moment and still get the bottom scraping on rutted tracks.

cheers yeah. if cancelled them and ordered some 750 R16's. theyre 31.5 tall iirc. ill throw them on some vitara steels.
i read on the Daihatsu forum that the vitara steels areent strong enought to cope with the fourtrak?

Each rim will have a weight stamp, they will work and wont be a problem till there overloaded and if you run someone over and they pick up on the rim capabilities, apart from that, fine

tinyone - on the forums - was trying to get rid of a set of 16 inch Daihatsu rims that I welded up many years ago using Dai' centres and Landrover rims, he might still have them ?

well i got the 16 inch zuk rims, and put 7.50 R16 dumper tyres on. and now it just wont stop. i suspect they'd be s***e on rocks with so little rubber hitting the rock, but in mud its glorious. the 750 16s seem to be narrow enough to solve the weight issue, whereas theres not enough weight to push the threads into the ground. theres some rubbing but not a lot. fantastic.
ive broken a gearbox mount, and am wondering, are the mounts the same on the independant as they are on mine, the leaf sprung model?
to that end, besides the suspension, are most other parts common to both models?
kind regards,
Ned .

Take it you're not planning on driving this on the road?
Dumper truck tyres are illegal on 4x4's due to the speed rating. That's Europe wide (and world) not just the UK. You can't fit a tyre of a lower speed rating than the top speed of the vehicle (killer on the **** old SPAM I've got, and even more of a killer for the mog). Dumper truck tyres will not be rated which means that they are good for either 25 or 30 mph, can't remember which off the top of my head.
Obviously for p&p sites that's irrelevant.

cant say ive been impressed by dumper tyres on 4x4's, I know it depends what type of ground your on but cos the weight of the vehicle isnt enough to push home the large tread i........hmmm not rated them at events ive been to but, maybe soft woodland soil they may work.

never been in any events, but im contemplating it. need to build a cage around the cabin and fit M/T's and safety harnesses. on the tyres, i love them. Neil i had the weight issue in mind when i was buying them, and when first trying them out. the skinny 7.50 R16 profile it think is helping in this matter. they seem to bed in. in fact it can be scary how much sometimes, when they suddenly find traction you get catapulted in the direction you were moving in . im in forests all the time here. ive never owned aggressive M/T's so i cant compare. i can let the car at idle and crawl through most stuff, wheras before i needed momentum for most obstacles
yah the bodys a bit rough!

i like that trak i allways run dumper tyres offroad where possible, some awdc events wont let you run dumpers though unfortunatly, (because theyre to good ) because they tear up the ground alot.
all i would say is that you will probably have problems on sideslopes, its the one place i get hung up on thanks to dumpers, they have little or no sideways traction. now be warned, im going to sound like a redneck now, and i understand if you completely ignore me. one solution to the dumper treads lack of sideways grip is to cut them with a chainsaw (see what i mean?) so that each cleaver pattern is essentialy 3 lugs, but only cut halfway down into the tread, this means you still have the self cleaning capabilitys of the dumper tyre. like i say its very rednech and unless you are extreemly capable with a chainsaw i wouldent recomend it. (runs and hides trying to avoid the stones)

yer well ya see by doing that your actually copying tread patterns of things like turbo saharas, greenway machos and the like.

nope, you dont loose any forward grip, although if you use the tyres on any hard surface (which i dont think you do? ) it does wear them quiker, but i do have a welded diff etc so that also speeds up the wear rate, especialy as it gets used around the farm, meaning its in contact with tarmac a fair amount.
in a way yes i suppose theyre simular, but the dumpers have much less surface area still and grip more, they also have the open tread pattern, which is why awdc wont allow them at some events.

yer our tractor tyres wear like buggery as they doo alot of road work and one of our new masseys does 35mph so wears even more on the tarmac.
