Windup is what happens when you use 4wd on grippy surfaces like tarmac. The sj doesnt have a centre diff in the t case like landrovers so cant be used on road.. keep it in 2wd on road and youl be fine!

If you imagine turning on full lock and looking at the tire tracks afterwards, you'd see that the rear tires travel further towards the centre of the corner, meaning they travel less distance than the front wheels. Because the front and rear axles are joined together, (by the chassis) the rear axle effectively tries to go faster than the front. This is why the transfer box will 'wind up', unless you have a centre diff like land rovers, Lada nivas etc.
Hope that makes sense, it's harder to type than explain with hand gestures etc!

on the sj you get windup using 4wd on hard ground...you may find it difficult or sometimes impossible to get it back out of 4wd into 2wd ...if this happens reversing a short distance whilst trying to shift to 2wd should get things sorted.
as said...you have no centre diff on the sj...use 4wd/low only on loose surfaces...
if you want to use low on hard ground the you need to do the 2wd low mod to the transfer case.(or disengage the front frewheel hubs if you have them)

I have only had bad transmission wind up once and that was on my Surf. Luckily I was only a short distance from some loose ground and shunted backwards and forwards a few time with 2WD selected. That freed it up.

What the army boys used to do with the old Alvis Stalwarts/Saracens was drive over a high kerb every now and then, as all 3 wheels on one side were locked together.
I had a jeep jeep once....
Put it in 4wd just to see if it worked and drove it forwards a few feet (dunno how I was supposed to know if it worked, but I was only 20 something then)
Couldn't get it back out of 4wd. Backed up to the same place, wouldn't come out. Eventually I put a jack under it and lifted one front wheel. It twanged around a quarter turn and the lever would move.
Turned out it had bigger tyres on the back than the front.....

When reversing (driving forwards depending which way its wound up) to relive the tansmission wind up make sure you are also steering one way or the other as well. If you just reverse in a straight line then there won't be a speed differnce between the axles to counter act the origional speed difference and it wont relive the wind up.

Railway sleepers were another, although from what I hear they used to just wind up the supermarkets by abusing their carparks. I also hear someone attempted to invade France in a Stalwart.

Hi,
I'm new to the forum and to the world of 4x4. I was recently on a steep gravel slope and, having trouble getting up it, came to a full stop and engaged 4L. As I tried to climb, the vehicle slipped backward a bit (I should have used the handbrake...) and the front tires span, while the rear one did not. I heard a loud "clunk" noise from the front of the vehicle. After that, there's a loud noise (as if someone were hitting the vehicle with a spanner) coming from the front whenever 4WD is engaged (this doesn't happen in 2WD). I've also noticed that the steering is tighter than before, particularly when turning right.
Could this be a sign of axle wind-up? It clearly has to do with the front axle, as it only receives power when 4WD is engaged. Could jacking it up on one wheel relieve the tension? (and if so, how is this done? Do I leave the vehicle in gear, jack up one wheel, then put it in neutral and switch to 4WD? And if that doesn't work, try the other wheel?)
Or may the damage already be done?
If I had the means, I'd lift up the entire vehicle with 4WD engaged and see which wheels spin and which don't, but it's not the case...
Any advice?
Thanks in advance!

No not transmission wind up. What you sound to have done is broken one of the front cv joints. This will need the axle stripping and new parts installing. Sorry.
