Have you tried discontecting the light (pull the bulb out), and seeing if the heater works then?

Most strange problems are caused by a bad earth as I think yours is.
Been looking at the wiring diagram and see that the light and dash share the earth with the heater. So first job make sure the heater has a good earth (black wire)
Please excuse the very quick diagram

Nope Smile

I do have an earth connection just below the dash on the far nearside but don't know if this is the correct one. You could just connect/try a wire from the black wire to earth just to see if this corrects things.

Sounds as though the handbrake cable is earthing the body to the chassis, or the other way round.

Make sure there is a good thick earth cable from battery to body, battery to chassis, and chassis to engine block.

If you lose the engine or chassis earth, when you operate the starter the handbrake cable sets on fire Embarassed

Quite common on discoveries...

Did you try a wire from the black wire to any earth point.
The (P) is just to show the handbrake is on.

Under the dash to the right of the heater there is a connecter with the four wires for it. Strip the end of some spare cable and push this up alongside the black wire at the connector and the other end to any exposed metalwork. Then try the heater, only a tempory job just to see if it works.
