Managed to pick-up a 404 mog and many many questions to come.
firstly it appears to take ages to warm up.
So is there a thermostat in the cooling system?
What does the flap in the exhaust manifold do?
While warming up the rear cylinders exhaust manifold appear to lag way behind the forward manifold.
Now i looked at the spark plugs which appear to be quite oily well 5 and 6 do as i never got round to looking at 1 to 4.
So what is the correct sparkplug as I imagine the little plastic book in halfords doesn't have a 1975 24Volt Unimog 404 on it.

Hi,
There is a thermostat and it is mounted in the top rad hose. It looks like a pressed metal housing and will be fitted inline.
The metal flap on the exhaust under the manifold is to get the inlet manifold up to temp in cold climates there is a bimetallic spring and a counter weight which will close as the exhaust gets to temp.
I run Champion N9YC Plugs in my 404 and have not had any problems.
Have you got mil spec screened ignition or has it been converted to take civilian plugs?
Regards
Bryan

It has civilian plug leads but they look damn old and give a tingle when touched while it is running.
Considering the set of leads on ebay from westfield but they are a bit ouch pricey

If your distributer cap is ok and there i no wear on the contacts i would buy a few metres of HT lead and some screw in motorbike plug connectors and connect them to your cap. For a hours work and £10 its got to be worth a try. if the cap is badly pitted like mine was it may be easier converting to a totally civi HT system;

NGK specify the BP6E or BP6ES spark plug for a 404 and suprisingly it was in the plug book!! Oh and they cost me £1.37 each last week.

Excellent i shall keep that in mind
I did some diagnostics last night. Rev the **** out of it in the pitch black and couldn't see any sign of tracking from the leads.
The big **** off flames out the exhaust point to there being sufficient fuelling.
So i shall try new plugs as i found a variety pack of plugs when cleaning them.
I shall see how things go but i might consider a mega squirt/emerald and some coil packs running off one battery. Gives the chance to upgrade to fuel injection should i choose to. I don't understand carbs they are witchcraft where as i understand emeralds as i can plug in a laptop and talk to it.

The mog carb is as simple as simple can get. The only adjustment is for idle. The rest is set and nothing much can be done.
Take the plate off the front of the carb with the 10mm bolt and unscrew the jets and make sure that they are clear (dont poke anything down, just blow them through).
The electrics on mogs are finikity at the best of times, set the plug gaps to 0.4 and the points to 0.5 (or visa versa - can't remember - but download that sodding great manual I posted the link too and you'll get the numbers).
Then it's a case of setting the timing. My money is that one of your jets is slighly blocked since one pair of jets is the front 3 cylinders and the other the rear 3.

What dxmedia says about the carb is pretty well right. They are simple. However, I had loads of trouble getting my 404 to run properly and I could tell it was fuel. Rebuilt the carb with a new kit from Westfield and it made no difference still ran like a pig. I spent hours on, over and under that machine until in the end, completely baffled, I stripped the carb again. Lo and behold, it was only when trying to blow the jets through that I realised one of the new jets I had fitted had not been drilled right through properly and it was not pushing fuel in at high revs. Cos I had had the kit for a while I could not really complain so had to buy another one. Re-jetted it again and it goes like stink now!! Only problem is that I tried to re-use the newish gaskets and it's leaking so got to strip again!! So the moral is, give that carb a good blow through and ensure all the jets are clear. Just need to fix my dodgy starter now.....

I'm also running BP5ES plugs which seem to be spot on. Recommended from benzworld, I've got the civilian conversion.
The plugs came to about £10 from ebay inc. postage.
