I'm planning on doing away with the merc one and just fitting a standard 3 way brass gas fitting valve and keeping the original lever. Having had apart the merc one it seems overly complicated for what it is and looks like a PITA to keep it from leaking.
If you want to buy a new one - vk-cars sell them for about £50 or something daft - This is the reason I want to fit a £5 brass gas fitting valve, and if it's good enough for gas, it'll be plenty good enough for a bit of petrol.

sounds fair enough, i was thinking of a Military landrover Series III fuel tap .
