Hi all,
I am really stumped. I have been looking for new tyres for my swb shogun for ages now.
Can anyone recomend a good tyre with reasonably aggresive tread but not to noisy on the road.
I originaly wanted Kumho kl71 but there is none in the country for ages.
Is insa sahara or maxis buckshot a good choice I use it a lot on road but also alot off road pulling a 10ft trailer so need good grip.
Also I know 31/10.50/15 is the right size but could I put 32/11.50/15 on with no alterations, I have arches.
Your help will be realy apreciated.

Maxxis buckshots have worked well for me. Roughly 3000 miles done on them, 500 off road. Great mud tyre, not too bad on fuel either and the sipes help when it rains. I run them on road @ 35psi.

Bought off camskill @ £69 per corner. 245/75/16

I chose them over the Kumho's, and i really like them. Cant comment on the paj tyre size but im sure someone will get back to you regading this.

Thnks for that, just out of interest why do you say don't use to much duel either. Generally do this style of tyre use more fuel?

Thanks

Aggressive pattern tyres will use more fuel to a certain extent,it could be as much as 5 mpg new and remould.Another point to look at is you are looking at both new tyres (maxxis) and remould (insa), there probably isn't much between the price, but there is going to be a difference in how long one lasts against the other. With 31x10.50R15 you are already looking at an oversize fitment (they came oe with 265/70R15),it should have 7 inch rims on it they will limit what size you can put on it,as in i wouldn't put 32x11.50's onto that size rim.

Thank u mr tyre.
So I will fit 31/10.5/15 and stay away from the larger size.
So what tyre would you suggest I like the look of the aggresive tread tyre on a 4x4 but as is I do use it on the road alot but also need the grip off road towing a trailer so good grip is needed. Do u think a more aggressive at tyre would be better. If so any suggestions would be great.
Thanks for your help so far.
Jez.

Maxxis is a good place to start,as in the buckshots that TJ uses as pictured. All the tyre manufactures will list something in 31x10.50-15, it's case of looking at some pictures and see what takes your fancy. If you want to list some the stuff, i'm more than sure there will be someone on here who has used them.

Mud Terrains ive used in the past have caused the truck to use more fuel. Mainly due to their extra weight and high rolling resistance. On the muddres, the tyre was first narrower and taller than the standard size, i run them at 35 psi. The last MPG figures from the last 3 fill ups have been. 28, 33, 31 mpg @ £30 a fill.

I was in the same situation i wanted the KL71's (30 9.5 r15), I waited 2 months until they came in stock, I couldn't afford five only four and had to wait till the next month to buy a spare, and they'd sold out again. I've just bought two more and an extra spare wheel so I have a spare for either side now as they are directional tyres. I am glad I waited though as they are great tyres on and off road, and were amazing in the bad weather over the winter.

Trouble is the old shogie only does about 28 ttg so the way the fuel prices are going maybe at would be better.
Anyone got any good ones they use my mate said the general grabber is a good one is this right?

Ive had a set of Grabber AT2's that offered very good levels of grip and wear, i went to 265/70/16 from my original 255/65. The tyre was heavier and due to being wider had more rolling resistance. MPG was around 28mpg. I think they are a good tyre. The AT2 is beeing replaced by the General Grabber - cant comment on this one.

Best tyres ive owned for fuel econemy & Traction are Michelin LTX AT + LTX M/S - These are not made anymore. But the Toyo Open Country AT & Pirelli Scorpion AT/R are the best for good MPG ATM IMO.

i have grabber AT2 good at tyre probably more what your after think its been replaced now but the new one is supposed to be good too less noise etc grabbers been very good in the deep snow weve had,an AT tyre normally better than a mud tyre for winter driving more siping on the tyre for ice/snow

there was a review on the new Grabber AT tyre in one of the mags but cant remember which one

I'm running the hankook dynapro atm on the terrano and they have been good so far they came off my old fourtrak that had done about 3500 miles on them and they have barely worn they are good on wet roads, superb on gravel tracks and only tried a bit of mud but seemed ok. They coped brilliantly in the snow we had earlier in the year.

here is a link to a review on them
http://www.4x4tirereview.com/abouttesting.html

and the tyres themselves

The new pattern Grabber is supposed to be very good, they just don't look very aggressive.

For my money I would go with the Cooper ST. Good aggressive AT tyre that really cuts it offroad. I have several friends run these on there Laning machines and I never get to recover them!

I am!! LOL. I run the mud pattern of these (The STT) and it really is the mutts nuts of tyres, the only time the ST struggles to follow me is at a pay and play site when I really get into it!

I have just been looking at reviews for the st and stt and they have nothing but great reviews. Would the st be better for me or the stt, the only thing I can see wrong with the stt is the road noise and increase fuel useage.

The ST is such a good AT pattern I wouldn't bother going to the STT unless you really get into the clag on a regular basis.

I run my 200 on them, its a manual and I struggle to get above 24 miles to the gallon!

I love my STT's on my shortie pajero, they go through bloody anything, great tyres.

As for road noise, I can't say that I've found them noisy at all, if you hit on one of those sections of really smooooooth tarmac I can hear a slight burr but nothing that annoys me.

Thanks for that stu. What about fuel consumption is it worse. I can't see much diff in the st or stt apart from they have 2mm bigger tread?

When compared side by side IRL you would see a big difference mate, the sidewall pattern is quite a bit different with more space between the lugs for flinging mud out the sides.

I can still nearly make a penny disappear inbetween the treads Very Happy

I'd have to hold my hands up here and say I'm really not the best man to ask about fuel consumption as my automatic pajero is a big lumbering hulk and I'm too scared to work out the actual MPG I'm getting - I wouldn't have thought there was much in it though between the ST/STT's... someone who's got a reliable motor might be able to help you there Wink

I was torn between AT/MT for flipping ages, stressing about MPG figures and road noise etc, in the end I just went for the MT's as I'd read on quite a few yankee sites that they considered the STT's to be almost like a 'more agressive' AT, they all seemed to give them pretty good reviews. I'm glad I got the STT's in the end though, very glad.
