I know this has been covered before but my search hasn't been fruitful.
I remember Shaggy saying he used a gear oil that was different to the standard SAE90 GL1. This oil is OK but isn't ideal for syncromesh gearboxes. I'm currently using the SAE 90 GL1 because of the yellow metal bearing issue, what are you 404 owners using?
Cheers, Dave

GL4 - It's cheap and fine with the brass / bronze bearings and syncro's.
DO NOT !!! use GL5, that will eat away the bronze bearings and cause your gearbox to stop rotating on you (normally with dier consequences).
You should find that your local argi supplier will sell gallons of GL4 for about £13 - £15
There's an extensive thread on benzworld on this subject.

Not sure what GL ive got.............but I was amazed when I put her to use in that minus 12 C we had - I got her started OK but it was fully 5 minutes before I could move the gear lever at all! Then we set off and the air brakes froze up!! Ive modded all the air lines now to prevent that but the EP90 drag is out of this world!

If i remember correct its the EP agent in modern oils that degrades the bearings you should youse a non EP gear oil .Make sure the oil is correct as it is cheper than a box rebuild.

Have done. It's GL4, which contains half the amount of EP additives of the GL5 oils. While it will cause some mild staining of the bushes it won't degrade them like GL5 can.
