after nearly 20yrs sterling service all over the world its time to replace my old buffalo bag and inner.
what do you people recomend?
i need it to use when away with scouts also for when i take my own boys away up to scotland back end of year.
also need it for trip to morrocco/tunisia next year.
also going to iceland with boys in2014

would prefer one with inner bag thats removable for summer use.

"Big Kipper" by Fox fishing. Winter. Might be too hot in summer months. Works well down to -15.

I have a snugpack softie 9 like what the army boys do. Seems fine enough and packs down small.

There will be many different opinions on here about which bags are best - but I would strongly recommend getting a silk liner for whatever you get. They come in at around 10-15 GBP and pack down really small. A liner will add extra insulation in the cold, it wicks sweat away from the body, keeps the inside of the bag clean (and is easily hand washable in a stream etc drying quickly) and when its really hot at night you can just sleep on top of the sleeping bag inside only the liner (as we have done many times).

Hope this helps.

If you can get them for £15 I'll have one thank you.

Get a Snugpak, and keep the Buffalo as an overbag for the winter?

They are still a bargain at that as you say Jon. I am using a Marmot Wave 3 just now which is pretty good but for the really cold weather (think camping at Braemar in Jan, -8deg last year) I have a plan. I bought the expanda panel for my snugpack so the Wave 3 will go inside it. Snug as a bug I reckon.

I have a 1 season (Marmot I think)that I use in the summer, an old force 10 2/3 season down bag that I use i I think it's definatly going to be dry (down is crap when it's wet). I also have one of the sythetic bags that Nanok made for the Woodlore shop that i use in a bivvy bag. I just mix & match depending on the situation.

from what you say you need I'd have a look at this

I do a lot of hammock camping at all times of the year, and use either a SnugPack Softie 6 or a Nanok Endurance -10°c bag. I like them both and have had no problem even down to about -6° in the hammock.

It all depends on the cash you are willing to spend.

Sleeping bags are designed to be used as a single layer to trap heat, they work better as the only insulation, so don't wear trousers or jumpers!

A huge factor in warmpth is your ground mat. The ground loves to suck up all your heat so make sure you have a good sleeping mat, like a thermarest! Air is one of the best insulators next to Argon, which is what I used to pump into my dry suit when ice diving. So inflatable mats work extremely well!

I currently have a Mountain Hardwear Lamina -30. Fantastic bag, pretty light for a synthetic fill 4 season bag.

Synthetic;

Pros:
- cheaper
- insulates when wet
- easier to wash

Cons:
- heavy size to weigh ratio
- thermal value is lower to weight ratio

Down;

Pros:
- extremely high thermal to weight
- compacts much smaller

Cons:
- expensive
- hard to wash
- virtually no insulation when wet.

I also have a a Vango venom down bag, it's a 1 season summer bag but it fits into my coat pocket when packed away. Only use it in the dry summer time.

I usually just take a synthetic like my Mountain Hardwear as it rains on me all the time.
