You should've let some air out of your tyres...........Unimog's generally have a re-inflation device fitted as standard!

Don't they? Everyone I've seen does..........although I don't know about 404's he still could have lowered the Tyre pressures a bit....might have been enough!

Hehe well indeed I have a way to reinflate the tyres, as I have installed the belt driven compressor from a 404 with airbrakes. But otherwise 404's usually don't have a compressor.
But I didn't want to go through the hazzle of letting air in and out, cause there was another way around.

Hey ,
I've one of these compressors waiting to go on. How are you controlling the air? Are you letting the compressor run all of the time and using a blow off valve for excess pressure?

Being cheap as I am, I have just mounted an airtank off of a cheap workshop compressor. And am just letting the air flow out into the open.. planning to fit a valve off of a truck put haven't found one yet (that was free atleast). The compressor was designed to run all the time, so that won't hurt it, but it's not supposed to build pressure constantly, so you need some sort of overflow valve.

They don't come down much even on no air. Sidewalls like brick walls.
Didn't know I had a flat on the back of mine until I ratchet strapped it to my trailer and it kept squashing. Drove fine mind!

Haha Rob that is true with your kind of tyres, but not mine, they deflate nicely and are killer in the sand because of it. But it's right many tyres in these sizes are hard as rocks in the sidewalls, but thats too bad on a mog, because it ruins the traction when offroad. because of all the snow we just had my current pressures are 1,5bar in the front and 1bar in the back, then I'm ready to tackle any sudden snow masses does make the steering quite hard though..

I am faced with the same problem every time I take mine out the workshop. Why they didnt make the door way that 1" taller.
The way I get round it is to fold the roof down.

On the compressor thing.......the compressor I fitted from the Leyland Roadrunner has a valve after the air tanks which allows air up to the compressor cylinder head when the tanks hit 120 psi, this unloads the compressor and although it is still turning, it is not working. It obviously takes a fair bit of power when compressing because you can detect a change in revs at tickover when it unloads!

Søren, what are you running for the 120bhp m180?
The reason I ask is that I have a high compression m180 twin carb sitting on the drive way, and I'm not sure which would be the best combination of head / carbs to swap onto the current block, or would swapping the whole engine be a better bet?
Thanks,

Well I have put in the complete 2,3 litre M180 with twincarbs and 9:1 compression head. BUT it isn't the 100cc's more that makes the difference, it is of course the head, carbs and the cam. And in hindsight I kinda regret not using the stock lower end. Mainly because this one is considerably more worn than the stock as Mogs rarely have seen many miles.. So if I ever have it out again I will probably take a Mog bottom end and use that with the head. I run large tyres as you can see, and the engine surely doesn't have an easy job, BUT when I fit the 12,5's that most others run, it goes like a rocket, on 10,5's, you won't believe its a mog! So definitly worth doing, it will change the engine a lot. But there still is no bottom end power and the type of engine is still not suited for this kind of vehicle. If you want some sort of comparison, my brother has a OM617 in his 404, and when he goes flat out in 6th, I can drive alongside him on my 49"s and shift down to 5th, and shoot past him. And mind you his mog goes better with the OM617 than with the stock petrol. So on the road the horsepower increase is very noticeable, but not enough grunt for my tyre size/gearing.
