Hi all,

So many confusing threads on this! So I'm opening a new one specifically for me and my 'Trak.

Fuel price is starting to grab me by the short and curly's, and I refuse to sell my Fourtrak, it's too usefull and I like it too much. So I want to look into Biodiesal, or Veg oil.

My question:

What can I use in it, veg oil wise e.t.c.?
I don't have a lot of time or space, so making my own biodiesel would not be an option. I also don't want to kill the engine (about 130k).

Any other advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Martin

i use ktc cooking oil with upto 95% in the summer,i am now down to 75% but if the weather drops below frezzeing for more than a week i will drop down to 50/50,i have used ktc and tesco cooking oil since i got the truck at the start of the year and it has over 160k on the clock.
i also use 2 stroke oil in the mix as well

Cheers for that!
So plain oil and some 2 stroke (still looking into that as have heard there's no point??). The 'Trak will take that happily without gumming the bores or killing the pump? I know it's an older designed engine, but everywhere I searched just went on about landy TDI's and TD5 lumps!

ok, for that plastic cubbie i pay £15. if i get 20L in a tin drum i pay £16.50.

the other option is waste veg oil.

i process 100L at a time and it takes 2-3 days. thats triple cold filtered to 1 micron.

most waste oil on the bay is about 40ppl. for £25 squid you can buy the equiptment to filter it yerself.

i drive a 99 ssangyong with the merc lump, and apart from when i got cocky and tried to run veg in -degrees conditions it runs perfect.

i run 40L wvo to 8L diesel when its below freezing, and 100%wvo the rest of the time.

i have a contact in a rather large outside catering company that sells me 100L of waste oil for a tenners beer money. i recover about 85-90L of useable oil and the rest is annimal fats (goo).

dont be scared to ask when you go the chippy ect, cash money talks

see the my merc 2.9td thread for processing kit

You're allowed 2500litres per year before paying tax.
Given a price difference of 45p/litre that is a saving of £1125/year.

That is exactly what I wanted to hear Cool look slike I'm off to tesco this evening to buy a tester batch. The trak is just under 3/4's of a tank, so will top up with veg oil and bed her into it slowly.

make sure you keep all the receipts for the veg oil that you buy and use and make a note on your mileage just incase you get pulled for it.

as far as i know its 2500l per 12months not per year and if you go over even by 1l you half to pay tax on all of it

this is copy'd from another forum
Hi all running my mk4 hilux on 50% vegoil 50% deisel for last 4 weeks runs A1 pulls great done 1000 miles so far .
I would like to know where i stand if i get dipped ? sorry may be a stupid question
cheers

Yes its tax free for the first 2499 litres of biodiesel or WVO (Waste Vegetable Oil) but as SVO (Straight Vegetable Oil) has never been taxed as a road fuel then it is subject to different legislation according to HMRC and is therefore liable to the full amount of duty per litre as normal road diesel.

As I also posted waaay back in this thread....

I spoke to someone at HMCE and they said that you must keep an accurate log in the car that can be produced at any time or they can prosecute you or impound the car with a minimum on the spot fine of £500 to release the car. They basically treat you the same as someone who puts red diesel in the car.

I asked what sort of information the log needs and they said mileage, dates, amount of VO and amount of diesel. They will use that information to work out if you are telling the truth as to how much VO you have used. I asked him how they can work this out if they dont have the vehicle MPG statistics and he told me that they carry a chart with them on most vehicle makes and models and MPG stats....******!!

He also added that it was up to you to prove that they are in the wrong if you want to appeal against one of their officers decisions. "THE HMCE IS VERY RARELY WRONG BUT ITS NOT UP TO US TO PROVE WE ARE RIGHT!" His words not mine!!!

So no it wasn't a stupid question but one that really should be addressed when experimenting with alternative fuels. It only takes one pedantic "jobs worth" to cost you a small fortune
