Following my disc brake conversion (will write it up one day) which widens the track on 404 axles, I bought a set of U900 wheels and tyres because they are a lot more inset. I was most suprised to find that the tyres had been mounted without tubes but had obviously been run like this for some time and were holding pressure. My concern lies in the fact that the rims don't have a recess for the bead to sit in, like you get on tubeless car or motorcycle rims. I called a couple of local agricultural tyre dealers to ask advice but they just said that as long as the tyre says tubeless then everything would be ok. As far as I'm concerned you can't just put a tyre that says tubeless on any old rim and think you will get away with it. There were lots of cases of people fitting tubeless tyres on early caravan rims (which originally would have had tubes and didn't have the bead recess) and having bad accidents when, under cornering the bead would shift away from the edge of the rim and rapidly deflate.
Now, I'm not about to embark on any serious cornering in the mog, even if I do get it on the road, but I am worried about pushing the beads away from the edge of the rim and causing deflation when off roading down tight gullies and deep ruts. Consequently I run the tyres at ridiculously high pressure to the detriment of traction. Am I worrying over nothing. Are there later unimog rims that do have the extra recess, or is it normal practice on vehicles and tyres of this size to run tubeless tyres on rims without the recess.
Look forward to comments and advice.
Andy.

i would always put a tube on a rim designed for tubes no matter what the tyre is marked up as. i have witnessed and been on landrovers and other heavy off road vehicles that have pushed the tyre off the rim due to lack of tubes and lateral forces whilst off roading normally in bloody awful locations or deep mud. then the fun starts trying to change the tyre tube it and be reassured you have done you best to keep your tyres on the rim.

Whether or not the rim is suitable for tubeless tyres or not is down to with what rim taper you have. 5 degree taper rims require tubes, 15 degree taper rims don't.A call to Mudie Bond (a main dealer) or Atkinson Vos will clear up whether the rims are suitable for tubeless tyres or not.I have fitted many tyres to a variety of different rims on Unimogs a large percentage of them were tubeless tyres on tubeless rims. From 18 inch up to 24 inch they all seemed to be tubeless bar a few specialist three piece rims for the more specialist unimogs chassis's you can get.As i said ring one of the above they will confirm what what for you.

Thanks for the info. Just been out in the cold with my torch and adjustable set square and the rim angle is definitely closer to 5 degrees than 15 degrees so I guess that they are not suitable for tubeless tyres. If I want to run at nice low pressures I will have to purchase and fit tubes.
I agree that puntures when knee deep in mud are a nightmare. I got a piece of reinforcing rod through one of my old XL's at Lydd, and trying to manhandle a mog wheel and tyre when you can barely stand up and your hands are caked in slippery clay is no joke.

Andy, if your rims have a part number on them a call to Simon at Atkinson Vos which will clear any thoughts you have about whether or not you have to fit tubes in them.Tubeless tyres have a different shaped bead area to them compared to tube type tyres, this is so they seal up on the rims.In the common sizes of unimog tyres 18, 20,22.5,24 and 26.5 inch it's been a long time since i have had to fit any of them with tubes.

Pah, man up! We managed to push 3 clean off the beads at Broxhead, with the 4th rapidly deflating. The crowd of doom circled around, "What are you going to do now?" First things first ,we put the kettle on, and had it up on it's feet 90 mins later. That was with 405/70/20s on.

Why don't you glue on some beadlocks on that cool thing? Did it to my 404 and haven't looked back since. Not even when at pressures the gauge can't measure.

I have been running tubeless 12.50x20 BFG MTs at 20 lb psi for more than two years, mostly in deep rock. Never any issues with the stock 404 rims.
I seldom bother to air down to less than 20, but I would not hesitate to drop down to 12... I do air up to 50 or so if I load more than about 1500 pounds and have to make an extended highway run.
