Are you going to have enough clearance for the engine on the front upperlink?

No i'm not, its the first hurdle but i'm going to wait untill the engine is mounted so i can work out how much i need to move it by, the front prop also won't clear the upper link crossmember but this is only tacked in for the same reason, good spot though

Got some more done on it last few days although progress is on hold at the mo, am in conversation with Rockwatt ref. the suspension design, i copied the setup from little toe thinking it was ok but am now led to believe that may cause issues, anyway more pictures:

While you've got the engine out, I would check the camshaft cover bolts, they tend to come loose and the cover then leaks oil. I would also check the rear crank seal, I take it your going to remove the box to look at the clutch/spigot bearing/release bearing anyway?
Is the timing gear driven?

cheers Ben will do, yeah i will give it a good clean, service etc etc before it goes in for a final time, probably chuck a new clutch in aswell as with the crossmembers where they need to be the gearbox will be a pig to get out in situ, cheers

Hurrah for gears! I would gladly put up with the extra noise to get rid of the belt!

I tried to get a spigot bearing for my engine, but apparently no one stocks them Confused so I used the one from my old engine. Might be worth doing the tappets too, does it still have the sticker on the side with the clearances on?

Edit: If your turbo water cooled? Does it have the oil/water cooler?

yeah i was a big fan to see that it was gear driven!
erm it possibly is water cooled actually, i was looking at turbo the other day and wondered why there was at least one extra pipe going to it, will investigate further tommorow.

yeah will deffinately do tappets as part of service and glow plugs as it took abit of cranking to get to start (although it was -7 to be fair)

cheers,
oh and happy new year all!

The water feed to the turbo goes from the small hose on the water pump. The oil cooler is under the oil filter.

Think measure up think more measure more think some more measure again

Tack weld on brackets, think and measure again

It's always a pain getting stuff to fit when it's a serious build.

I think I'll be building a buggy some time soon, I plan on building a wooden chassis first to work out where most things go first

yep!, spent lots of time reading up on link suspension when i was looking to coil my SJ but this time i made the mistake of copying little toe's setup without reaserching it much, ive now come round to the idea i need to cut it all off and start again, will be johnny jointing it to add strength, minimise vibration and probabaly add flex as the rose joints didn't have proper missalignment spacers, sadly this means the build time will be extended as i don't have the money to shell out straight away on the joints but will buy one from D4X4 so i can get on with making brackets etc using the one joint to get sizes right,
Bit of a pain but its worth it if it makes it better in the long run, some degree of adjustment will be factored into the suspension design to allow antisquat adjustment. can still get on with other bits of progress so there will be more pics to follow soon,
cheers all

right well stripped it back down, cut mounts of the rear axle need to clean them up properly ready for new brackets once suspension design/geometry has been finalised, slowly building a collection of parts.

one of the suspsension links felt abit miss-shaped so cleaned the paint off quickly and looks like its been lengtened or something Shocked wasn't keen on finding welds along a link arm like that, glad ive been inspired to start again as that way i know how its all been done from the ground up!

a couple pics:

while im waiting for parts i thought i would give the axles a strip down, makes it easier to clean all the old mounts off, easier to work with once theyre mounted as theyre ******* heavy when built up! postman bought a nice little present today aswell, finally!!

bit of redneck halfshaft pressing:

cheers all
