I have got round to rewiring my 404 mog, and under the bonnet is this:-

The big silver round thing, with three wires coming out of it. I first thought it was the horn, but I've found that since, and now i'm stuck.

Help!

It's the voltage drop (called a ballast resistor?) for the ignition

It has a resistor to drop the 24V to around 12V for the coil, when you turn the starter on it is bypassed (one of the wires off the selenoid) and the coil gets direct battery voltage, which will be (maybe) 14-16V when the starter is on. Stops the coil getting only 1/2 voltage when you're starting.

Proper old fashioned!

How far are you going with a rewire? Those bloody connector blocks are the hardest part of taking the cab on and off. Derek re-wired it with a complete new loom with modern parts - and plugs to disconnect the cab from the chassis!

We even have a wiring diagram!

catch you soon,

jim

I've just put the "plate" over the wiring loom, after lots of scuffed knuckles, and the bonnet dropped on my head. Not long now until I can hear it fire up for the first time. So am I right in thinking that the ballast resistor connects to the 15 position on the coil?

I've no experience with the original wiring, we ripped it all out. The coil should certainly have two positive wires to it - a direct feed (possibly via the starter selenoid) and a feed in from the resistor. They go to the same terminal on ours (I think!) but for the original coil I wouldn't know.

Mog mail list may help (www.mogmsgexch.com) - or ask dave, he's pretty stock.

Where is dave, havnae heard from him in ages

His engine transfer? What's he putting in (and there's me thinking he was "stock")

jim - just welding up a battery carrier above the rear axle to take 2 * 12v batteries.

coil, the ign coil on a mogg is 24 volt not 12 volt, the wires feeding the ballast resister are as follows, one is ign live feed to the resister side, the other is only live ign in the starter depressed set up, this is a direct conection within the round thiny case lol.
as for the coil feed, there is one wire which comes from the distributer and one which comes from the ballast resister live feed, bit like the set up on oldy worldy cars, really simple and numpty proof system donk !!!!!
drop us a buzz if ya stuck

Does anyone have the spec for the value of the ballast resistor? Mine is reading ~4.2 ohms, and there is some question that this may be too high.

Searched the forum and still a little confusued!

I have starting problems on the mog and I tend to lean towards the coil breaking down......

1) Anybody know where to buy a 24 volt coil from?

2) Can it be converted to 12 volts?

3) Any other advice, especially the resistance of the inline the resistor?

When my mog was 24v and petrol, I used a 24 - 12 volt converter and then used a standard 12v coil.
The 12volt supply was also usefull for other 12v accessories, like electric fuel pump, phone charger etc. The rest of the truck was the usual 24v setup.

I just run 12 v from battery mid connection with a 12v coil bypassing all the resistors and ballasts. Laughing
