Hi Guys, Crying or Very sad
I think my rear axle on my Terrano is F****, it is the LSD type fitted to a 2003 Terrano Commercial.
I have cleaned the diff out to day and refilled with LSD Oil, but it is still very noisy and judders badley when turning a corner.
What I need to Know are they re-pairable or can I fit a non LSD type from a eairler vehicle? Confused
Any help would be appreciated.

Sad Hi guys, not had much luck with a replacement Terrano back axle from a breakers, as most have very high mileages and are probably the same or worse than mine.
Any body know if any other type of axle will fit? seems a shame to scrap the truck just for a axle. Question

If its had the worng oil in it for a while and it often happens. It can take a couple hundred miles for th fresh oil to sort it out ad then its best to change it again.

LSDs canbe a bit noisy in use if working well though, but without hearing it i can't tell you wether yours is normal.

A replacement diff/axle off ebay shouldn't be too hard to get hold of. Beware they don't all have the same ratio in them, you need to get the right on or you to get the matching front diff too.

I've the same problem with my 2002 terrano. Stripping the diff, the problem is the small thrust sleeves which take the drive to the alternate LSD clutch plates. Dont hold out much hope that they'll be available so I might just grind off the "ears" of the driven plates and just have it as a conventional diff. Easy diff to dismantle if you have a bit of automotive experience. Just make sure you note and mark all the parts such as bearing caps , spacers etc.

Take the LSD out, sit it in a bath of petrol over night, let it drip dry for the day and refit with the LSD additive.

It's a problem with the clutch plates sticking by the sound of it from a PO not using the additives.

If you,ve got as far as getting the diff out you might as well whip out the 8 14mm head bolts that retain the two halves and physically inspect the clutch disc thrusts and springs. Only a five minute job at that point. Especially if you have metal debris attached to the magnetic drain plug. In mine the clutch plate ears had worn through the thrusts and had cut grooves in the casing which was causing the plates to lock hard together. Nothing magical about Lsd's you can usually see the problem if you look.

On a 2003 be aware tat you may have a different axle to most Terranos. Some of the later T2s came with C200 rear axles (look for access panel on back of axle casing) whereas all early ones had H233b types where the diff is removed from the casing from the front in a cast iron casing. The H233b is far stronger.

Also be aware that not all versions use the same diff ratio and you need it to match your front diff.

On a similar note, I need to identify my rear diff. I have 52 plate 2.7TD Terrano Van.

The diff works fine but it is incredibly rusted, seriously, I have never seen rust like it. It has pretty deep cracks and peals in the rust and am concerned the casing will fail at some point.

I'd like to just swap it out with another rear axle but need to make sure it a) is the same type (I am assuming H223B from what I have read, and the occasional judder at the rear wheels when manoeuvring tight bends makes me think it is LSD) and b) the ratio is correct.

Any idea how I can confirm the diff type and ratio?

The real stinker is it has only done 70k so I will probably be swapping it out for a more worn rear diff unless I go to the trouble of having my internals put into the replacement casing £££££

Take a pic and let us see it.

If the rust is on the cast iron diff carrier it is nothing to worry about, the metal is so thick it will never rust through, if on the axle casing then just brush it up and paint - swapping the axle over is a fairly big job due to the sheer weight of it and as you say you'll probably be buying a higher mileage item of unknown heritage.

Thanks- that's encouraging. I'll get a photo up for your group opinion and get busy with the wire brush and grinding stones!

Here are two photos for identification - I am assuming it is a H223B. Also the most worrying crack.

It is difficult to judge scale but some of the flakes that came of were up to 3mm thick but were clearly the original underseal. Some of the other stuff was up to 3mm (maybe 4mm in the worst case) of rust.

I have since cleaned the diff up with a wire brush and then grinding stones as best I can, then a liberal coating of Kurust. Tomorrow it will be undersealed and waxoyled with the rest of the chassis.

It is a bit of an odd beast this van; the body work is very good. The engine has only 70k on it but underneath it was pretty rusty. I can only assume it was used on beaches. Good old hindsight!

On another note; I got the oil info from opieoils.co.uk which stated 80w-90 LSD oil requiring 3 litres. I drained the old oil out but only managed to get 1.5 ltrs in before it reached the filler hole. Have I done something wrong?

Thanks in advance!

Thats the later, weaker, C200 rear diff. Oil wise it does hold less than the H233B so you're right Opie oils are wrong.

Thanks Terranosaurus.

Is there any way of finding out the gear ratio and swapping to an earlier, stronger H223B rear diff?

How would I identify a suitable H223B rear axle? Ratio, Model years, etc?

Hi

In early spring on road managed to destroy front original diff lock.
Now found new one:

C200 Limited Slip Differential
SKU: DTACC20029LSD
C200 Axle wih 29 Splines
vs calmini diferential

Has anyone a experiense with that diff lock, reliability, durability, grip?
Or is there something better to but there?

The car moves daily in road and need 4wd to get home, road is bad in winter its wery difficul conditions on road.

Help me decide. Yes, the Nissan R180 is really 27 splines, but is actually a bigger problem with rear. I broke original LSD , and now need something else in there. Rear Axle C200, 29 splines. Can not decide which one to put the Calmini LSD 29 splines (NP 35110), which is granted by the manufacturer, though I guess that is se-R200A Navara X-terra or the front axle (R200A and C200 should be same size and cymbals), or choose a market 4x4parts.com C200 Limited Slip Differential
SKU: DTACC20029LSD
C200 wih Axle 29 spline. Which is preferable at the end of the mind. Which is stronger?
I broke Original LSD by mistake and Im not ignorance of what is and how strong the LSD is.

Forge the C200 rear axle - you'll only break it again. Look of for a H233B unit and fit that as a whole.

Haven't a clue on the various LSD options for the C200 and I doubt anyone else on here has either.

Hi all,

Bit new to all of this so apologies for any repetition.
I picked up a terrano 2 1998 150K on the clock. when ever I'm round the country lanes - any corner a bit sharper than average the rear tires ( i'm sure thats what it is ) squeal like mad as if the diff is gripping more than it should.
I drained the oil the otherday and had rather a lot of metal on the plug but nothing identafiable. I'm planning to have the diff out in a months time for a proper going over. its the H233B unit.

any ideas? Confused

Many thanks

Put proper LSD il in run it for a couple of hundred miles and then change it again for LSD oil - should solve all your problems.

I've replaced it with proper lsd oil, when I drained it - refilled it to the plug level, its done 300 miles scince. would draining it again make that much difference?

I'll give it a go this weekend

It does seem to. The plates in the diff get contaminated over the years and it takes an oil change to loosen the crud but then your oils full of crud so a second change seems to sort em out. Regular issue with Terrano's and a couple of changes seems to sort it.

What oil did you use out of interest?

Okay,

Just got some new tyres woo!! only problem is when the back axle is jacked up and the wheels turned clockwise.... the other does the same - seems the diff is locked up, - its been sqeeking like hell round tight corners. Its comming out this weekend manged to steal some time on a old MOT hoist.

how easy is it to remove the diff? - is a heavy duty one - not with a tin plate on the back.
what do i need to be looking at and is there a gasket on the back casting that would need replacing >?

any ideas chaps

many thanks

the wheels should both turn the same way on a lsd, i would investigate further before diving in and pulling it out, as you might find yourself dissapointed to find its the same afterwards alot of hard work!!

Hi,

I'm new to this but can anyone advise?

I have a Nissan Terrano II Touring, 03 plate with the 3.0 ZD engine. Its done 80000 miles.

When I am setting off, the back sometimes rumbles and this is occasionally apparent when I have my caravan on the back. It goes away on the truck gets going, or straightens up and I have no other issues.

Is it the LSD?

Is it the oil needing to be chnaged in the Diff, if so which is best to put in?

Does anyone know which type of back axle I have on my truck?

Does anyone know what it may be?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers Phil

Hi all,

My level plug is completely shafted and I can't get it out. Is it possible to get a new cover plate for the diff on its own?

Is the access panel just a single plug or a panel you can completely unbolt? I have a single plug about half way up on mine, the diff can only be dismantled by undoing nuts on the propshaft side.
