Hi all.
We all need a plan and mine is to get Madmog road legal by summer 2011.

Madmog, like alot of 404s is registered as agricultural and it would be fairly straightfoward to put her on the road as such. Chances are though that with her being such an unusual beast I would get pulled and as I am not in any shape or form involved in agriculture I could wind up in all sorts of bother. So I have decided instead to play things straight, and approached the dvla for advice. I explained that the vehicle was built in 1959 (first registered in 1977) and they suggested changing the taxation class to historic but would need to inspect the vehicle to check its identity and age. I took it for inspection a couple of days ago to the dvla centre at Chelmsford and got some very strange looks fron staff and customers (the sort of look that says 'what the hell is that piece of sh*t doing in the car park). I got the impression that the man doing the inspection had seen all sorts of non road worthy vehicles before and met all sorts of chancers and was not at all phased by me or my Mog. The inspector checked the chassis number and the engine number and asked a few questions about various components then said put it back on your trailer, we'll be in touch. And that was that. Here we are a few days later and I received a letter this morning from the dvla asking me to prove that the chassis number on my vehicle relates to a 1959 vehicle. The number is 4041149502*** and I believe that the seventh and eighth digits are the year of manufacture written back to front (according to my manual anyway).
So, does anyone know of an official body (the Unimog 404 club of great britian, that sort of thing) who could write me a letter confirming the age of my chassis number, which would be recognised by the dvla.
Andy.

Yes I know I look tired in that picture but I had just spent hours getting that damn hub off.

Strange, I put the reg number onto the DVLA website and this is what it tells me:

The vehicle details for EJB 771V are:

Date of Liability 01 08 1993
Date of First Registration 18 04 1980
Year of Manufacture 1959
Cylinder Capacity (cc) 4200CC
CO2 Emissions Not Available
Fuel Type Heavy Oil
Export Marker Not Applicable
Vehicle Status Unlicensed
Vehicle Colour YELLOW

So they already have it listed as a '59 vehicle...

Good work Damian from a town far far away. I was not aware that this facility existed. I shall talk to the DVLA in the morning and see what they have to say.
Andy.

if your manual is an oficial Mrec. publication, would that not prove that your chasiss is from 1959?

I,ve only got a poor photocopy but I could possibly borrow a manual. Logically this would prove the age but I have a feeling that they will settle for nothing less than an official letter signed in blood.

Hi Fred, Looked today to see when next bures was on and it was today. No time to prepare so missed it. 14th November is the next one, are you up for it. Can't say for absolutely definite whether I can make it as I have been working away in France recently and they want me back, but if its on my calendar I will make every effort to be there. Just been looking at the pictures of when we were playing in the mud and water. Happy memories. Andy.

Email Peter Reimstat (PM me and I'll dig out his email address) at Daimler and he'll send you a copy of the data card of the original order from the chassis number. I've done it with all 3 of mine and he's returned the details pretty quickly.

It will show date of order and date that it was built if I can work out the German corretly. It's a free of charge service also.

Thanks dxmedia and everybody else who has responed. Today I called DVLA Chelmsford and pointed out that the date of manufacture was already on their database (as pointed out by Damian). They apologised and said they would continue with my application. Excellent.
Andy.

Put DVLA in a google seach. In the first few results will be one called 'DVLA vehicle licencing online home' click on it.
Should say 'Welcome to DVLA's vehicle online services'. Down the left hand side are some little road sign type things. The one to click on is 'vehicle enquiry', this will take you to another page where you have to click 'next'. On the following page you can enter your registration number and pick the make of vehicle from the drop down list. Click 'next' and hopefully your vehicle details should miraculously appear.
Hopefully this should be straightforward enough to follow.
Andy.
