|

|
Morning Folks,
I have 10 k to spend and am thinking all road or xc70.
I would love a D3, but to pricey and worried about reliability on early ones. Wife wont let me have another DII after i ended up, upside down in a field.
So for my hobbies, living up a farm track and living where the roads are low priority for being cleared I am looking for an AWD estate.
Any other suggestions.
Oh the commute is 50 miles a day
Cheers

The All Roads came with a 2.5 litre,or 2.7 litre engines.I would expect the XC70 to give a slightly nicer ride. The all road did suffer air suspension problems around 01-03 to do with failling air bags i believe, but some suspension problems could be 'reset' by leaving them over night in certain positions, a bit P38ish almost. The scooby is another good choice but have had engine problems and are known to be a gas guzzler.

Gf has an Octavia 4x4 estate - they come in petrol and diesel flavours, with a version with raised suspension as well if I recall...
Nice motor, hers has the 1.8T petrol engine

That would be an Octavia Scout, and they seem to be as rare as rocking horse poo on the second hand market!

I little over your budget but we just got a 54 plate XC90 for 14k. It is the Excutive spec (which means leather, AC, Sat Nav and DVD player) so prehaps a little OTT for your use, but....
......auto and cruise control makes it a breeze on a long journey. Did Calais to Munich in a day no problem and I wasn't tired at the end of the journey.
I would recommend them to anyone. A slightly older one or one with lower spec may fit into your budget. For wait it is worth my brother-in-law traded an AllRoad for an XC70 and like the Volvo a lot more.

my old man has an XC70, its a loverly motorway cruiser for LONG LONG journeys. He chose it over the old allroad as the seats were more comfortable and his bones are old.
Some newer models had hill descent control i believe!
I think its already been said XC90 is bigger and looks better.
But can you handle being a volvo driver?
I'd still say Disco 2! put your foot down!

The XC90 has not changed much over the years (unlike the XC70), so if you have a nice and clean early version, it can look like it nearly new...
I got a base version, it's got already more that what I wanted...
The ride is very soft, so beware if one of your passenger suffer road sickness.
XC70 are very good car as well... but I don't like the early version
The AllRoad is good, but harder ride and "small" inside.

dont think you will find the xc90 toreg or pathfinder as good on fuel sa the estates i know a guy with 2.5td toreg and it was low 20s mpg
my other friend with the allroad 3.0td can get 30mpg towing his caravan if mpg an issue stick to the estates no idea on tax bands they prob all expensive

I have an XC70. I would have to agree the ride is a bit soft but with the 4-c suspension you can put it in sport and improves things a lot. It is a comfortable cruiser which handles better than larger 4x4's. It also tows a 23' caravan with ease. MPG depends on the type of driving you do but on short runs to and from work I recon it is doing about 36-38mpg.
I have driven an XC90 and all I can say is that the 70 obviously drives more like a car. The only real advantage with the XC90 would probably be that they are available with 7 seats which can be handy.

a good point for the XC90 is the inside space... I'm not a small guy and used to have a Disco TD5... I like the headroom and airspace of the XC90
Also, with the rear seat down, you can load a LOT of stuff in the boot and it's a proper flat bed
Bad point is that the footprint of the XC90 is massive... very wide...
Fuel wise... I do 310Miles / week commuting, 80% motorway at 85mph (France...) and 20% A&B road (hills/mountains).
With my brand new tyres I'm doing an average of 36mpg. With my old tyres I was at 39mpg. (similar type, just more rubber)

the Forester stay away from the turbo due to fuel consumption, there is always the Outback........struggling at a diesel in your budget though
You'd be surprised how much you can put in a Forester(I had Well over half a ton in mine)

I currently own a Hyundai Terracan Auto, when the road tyres are on i average 33mpg. Lots of space inside the vehical and stacks of torque from the 2.9tdi. For 10k you can get a top of the range with very lo mileage 08reg. If you were to use it for towing there are fue better, i have owned landies, landcruisers, shogun, patrols. It is larger than a xc70/90 or allroad. Also try looking at the Kia Sorento, ssangyong rexton. Not mainstream 4x4/awd brands but they do evrything a disco does for a quater of the price. Hope it helps.
Personaly i would go with a XC70 or 90 over the audi allroad. The xc90 is very reasonable on fuel consumption and if you wanted to tow with it they are very stable and offer bags of torque. The xc70 does this very good aswell.
