No they don't fit. You need an adapter plate.
In the UK you'll probably have to get this manufactured as the diesel Niva was never imported here. You might have more luck on european or eastern european forums where the diesel Niva was available.
The factory diesel also used the Pug XUD engine hence adapter plates do exist.
You'll also have problems with the starter motor (amongst other things). The starter motor is on the right on pugs and this is just where the steering box is.
That's why RHD diesel Nivas were never produced.

It has been done. What people do is mount the starter motor to the adapter plate and mod the bellhousing.
The Pug XUD is probably the best engine you could put in there. It's reliable, can do stellar distances, is reasonably light diesel-wise and it's about the same size as the Lada engine.
Your other option is find an engine/gearbox combo that's roughly the same total length as the Lada combo.

It is not that hard to make the lada gearbox fit. and to answer your question about the transfer case it is not attached to the gearbox. so whatever gearbox you decide to go with you could still use a lada transfer case.
someone mentioned that the LDV has a RWD manual box inbehind a pug XU engine.
here is my build thread where you will find most of the things you need to do to make the lada box fit.

The PSA XUD9 has been put in an SJ also. Factory fit, but it was the SJ produced in Asia somewhere.

The PSA is a nice reliable engine, (even thou mine just blew up) But it is much bigger and heavier than a Lada engine!!!!

I beg to differ it is about 5cm longer, and approx same weight.

It is longer, how much i don't know but i can measure it. Got both in my garage. The Pug is also wider, higher and has more stuff around the block.
A Niva petrol is 1340kg according to Norwegian pink slips and a diesel is 1230, in reality i think it's even heavier. I have had to 1.9D Nivas, both has much less height under the front diff.
