Hi,
Planing to fit a winch to the SJ. This is at superwinch with a warn 9.5xp motor fitted on. I have G16A engine fitted with 50amp alternator and standard SJ battery at this time.
Thinking about up grading the battery, Running two of them?
Do you think I need to run a spilt charger?
Then to the alternator, Want to fit something a little bigger for charging the batterys. Is there any alternators which fit well on this engine?
Thanks
Radlands

Hi please see my post "Jimny second battery"
I've fitted a second battery (Numax)in the engine bay and wired in parallel with the original though a 200A relay. The switch live to the relay is an ignition live (cigarette lighter) through a switch on the dash.
When I close the relay there's a notable extra load on the alternator as the revs drop and belt starts to slip.
From various forums I have read of others who have done this and thought that you couldn't "overload" the alternator as it can only ever output it's maximum. Do I need to upgrade the alternator or just tighten the belt!
I've since tightened the belt and it's still the same.
I thought this route was simpler then your smart charge durdzz and I can use the relay to jump start, but maybe i should go the smart charge route?

I only ever used one battery and the standard alternator and for the times i used the winch (half a dozen per play day?) it was fine. The only advantage of 2 batteries is that the starting battery doesn't go flat so you can always start the engine, it depends what your using it for but is that a problem on a play day when there are a dozen others with jump leads? Also, the typical split charge relay setups mean that the batteries are always linked whe nthe engine is running, so if your winching with the engine running it will flatten both batteries anyway. A bigger alternator will recharge the battery more quickly but won't keep up with a winch so you only need to do this if your going to be winching regularly and need the battery topped up quickly between pulls.
My advice, fit it, try it. If it goes flat before you've got yourself out the hole fit bigger / multiple batteries, if it doesn't recharge the batteries between uses go for bigger batteries or bigger alternators.
