Quick couple of questions:
1) Does someone have a standard height niva they can measure the height from the centre of the front hub to the join line of the bonnet for me to compare to??
(I can't measure to wheel arch, they been trimmed.)

2) When welding panel steel, Your ment to weld a small patch (Inch?) at a time, how long do you need to leave it to cool down before welding the next inch? I'm wanting to tidy up some panels, but don't want to over heat them and warp them like my last attempt!

3) Also, What is the torque setting for the bolt's holding the steering box in place??
(One bolt's fallen out!! Embarassed )

Thanks,
Phil.

33.3 - 41.2 Nm

The overall height of an un-modified Niva should be 1640mm.

Just cool the patch with a damp cloth.

I know this does not answer your queery exactly but:

On me white 1988 1.6 Niva with Dobie springs and 5cm packers on the rear and unknown ******* springs on the front I measure 60cm from the centre front wheel hub to the horizontal flat part of the guard edge just below the bonnet lid.

On me green donor 1988 1.6 Niva with standard suspension front and rear I measure 58 cm from the centre front wheel hub to the horizontal flat part of the guard edge just below the bonnet lid.But this is with the vehicle sitting on blocks on the right front and three wheels because as of this week I took my first part off it.The front hub on the white one,the bearing face was worn and flogged out Sad

Thanks Guy's.

That makes miniskip 2cm below standard at the front- even after putting in the wedge lift!! Laughing Laughing
I know the spring's are old and saggy, didn't think the diesel weighed THAT much though!!

With 30" tyre's on, the overall roof height is 1645mm high, only 5mm above standard, I'm confused??

...So must be time to lift it up more!
Where's my grinder Evil or Very Mad

those toyota lumps are heavy though Phil

when I weld panel I dont do continuous welds. I will tack the whole piece on then do two or three spots in quick sucsession next to each other then move to the opposite side and do two or three there and just keep rotating untill all the gaps between the original spots are joined. Time consuming but never get much warpage. hope it helps.

I can't weld to save my life, but a buddy who's an excellent welder at avoiding warpage does pretty much that and yep it works a treat.
